BEVERLEY
Race 4 No2 JAKAJARO (Nap)
Trainer: Robert Cowell – Jockey: Jamie Spencer
The best race of the day can see JAKAJARO getting the better of JM JUNGLE. Little separates them on the book but the superior natural early pace of the former can enable him to get a grip on proceedings and bounce back from a couple of heavy defeats in much better company.
Race 6 No3 MISUNDERSTOOD
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Danny Tudhope
Former French based MISUNDERSTOOD appears to be getting his act together after nine outings on grass for O’Meara. He’s posted a couple of recent near misses at Class4 level including when beaten a nose after being strong in the market at Thirsk. Should he enjoy the rub of the green the hooded four-year-old can prove hard to beat.
Race 8 No6 BUCKLAND BELLE
Trainer: Ollie Sangster – Jockey: Danny Tudhope
There’s no getting away from the sheer consistency of BUCKLAND BELLE who often attracts support to the degree that she’s started favourite for each of her last seven races on grass. The move to turf has brought about significant improvement, while the daughter of St Mark’s Basilica has in form Tudhope in her saddle to make her an automatic choice.
FONTWELL PARK
Race 4 No4 STARSHINE LEGEND (Nap)
Trainer: Olly Murphy – Jockey: Sean Bowen
As the least experienced in this long distance handicap hurdle STARSHINE LEGEND is open to further improvement. He raised his game in a first handicap when powering clear on the run in at Worcester to score as an unsupported 14-1 shot. It’s doubtful there will be similar value in him today, but he’s nevertheless worth backing to follow up.
Race 5 No4 FLASHY BOY
Trainer: Robbie Llewellyn – Jockey: Charlie Price
In receipt of stacks of weight from his three opponents it’s hard to look past FLASHY BOY. The nine-year-old has rewarded his connections with a pay day at Newton Abbot at the end of last month together with a couple of podium finishes from four outings through the summer. This is a better class race, but he’s hard to oppose.
WARWICK
Race 5 No1 GUTS AND GLORY (Nap)
Trainer: Clive Boultbee-Brooks – Jockey: Stan Sheppard
Four-year-old filly GUTS AND GLORY proved a nice winner for this column at Stratford when always travelling like a winner. She came home unchallenged in that maiden hurdle and is going into battle for this first handicap assignment with her tail up.
Race 6 No5 PIPERS CROSS (Each Way)
Trainer: David Evans – Jockey: Cameron Johnstone
On a first outing for Evans who doesn’t run many over jumps, PIPERS CROSS could be the answer. The Soldier Of Fortune mare proved a consistent earner for her previous trainer with one success at Fontwell, but it could pan out that after another change of scenery she can win this.
SOUTHWELL
Race 2 No1 LONDONER (Nap)
Trainer: Daniel Kubler – Jockey: David Probert
One or two catch the eye in this all aged handicap including the so far disappointing SHIPBOURNE. That horse is surely better than we’ve seen, but the claims of LONDONER make him the more reliable route to goal. Dan Kubler’s charge has put in a few good efforts on turf through the summer, but what makes him tempting is his second in a tight finish at Wolverhampton on a switch back to sand. He’s in good order and fancied to better that effort.
Race 3 No11 ASSIRI HEIGHTS
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
In a good betting race Frankel colt ASSIRI HEIGHTS looks the way to go. It’s hard not to be drawn by his profile, as he represents the country’s top trainer/jockey combination and put in a career best when second at Kempton with Murphy in the saddle. While his outer draw is a small source of worry he’s already been to this course and will be more streetwise for his first run in a handicap.
Race 5 No5 MERRY
Trainer: James Horton – Jockey: Daniel Muscutt
Breaking from the favoured rail on this 1400 metres round a left handed bend can assist MERRY to continue her earning spree. The Zoustar filly has only once finished out of the frame in six outings confined to the all-weather. She knows how to win but it would be her first success in handicap company for her in form stable and jockey.
Race 7 No6 HEAD GIRL
Trainer: Jonny Portman- Jockey: Rob Hornby
This is a big step up the distance ladder from a mile and a half to two miles that HEAD GIRL can surmount. The daughter of Time Test was made plenty of use of when opening her account in a Beverley seller, but built on that to beat all bar Heart Sign in a tight finish at Chepstow where she was strong through the line. It would not be a surprise if she tried to dominate from the front.
