NEWMARKET
Race 1 No7 DOUBLE RUSH
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
DOUBLE RUSH won the 3yo handicap over six furlongs at this meeting 12 months ago and can serve up an action replay against older horses over the same trip. He sustained a good level of form except for his final start in which things didn’t go to plan. He’s ready for his 2026 reappearance for top connections.
Race 3 BETWAY EARLY OF SEFTON STAKES (Group 3)
No2 BOILING POINT
Trainer: Karl Burke – Jockey: Clifford Lee
The first Pattern race of Newmarket’s season can fall to BOILING POINT. The Too Darn Hot entire too a keen grip in Lingfield’s Winter Derby before wilting in the final furlong, but he’s now back on his favoured sound terrain at a track where he recorded a career highlight by winning the Cambridgeshire last autumn.
Race 4 LANWADES STUD NELL GWYN STAKES (Group 3)
No12 MUBASIMAH (Nap)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Rob Hornby
In this trial for the 1,000 Guineas my eye is drawn to MUBASIMAH whose CV includes winning form over the course and distance. Her forcing tactics almost paid off on her only other start in the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes, while she’s been going nicely at home in preparation for a race where being ridden to the fore can pay dividends.
HAYDOCK PARK
Race 5 No3 RED DELTA (Each Way)
Trainer: Fiona Needham – Jockey: Danny McMenamin
As long as there’s a bit of cut on the ground RED DELTA can outrun his huge price in a race transferred from the abandoned Cheltenham Spring meeting. The chestnut is a relatively inexperienced chaser, and having only the tenth start of his career. He won at Sedgefield and Market Rasen before staying on for minor honours at the end of the marathon Eider Chase at Newcastle. If his latest underwhelming effort at Carlisle can be overlooked, he’s capable of getting involved.
Race 6 No6 KILWAUGHTER
Trainer: Philip Hobbs – Jockey: Mr Jack Stenhouse
KILWAUGHTER posted a first success under Rules to score going away at Newbury under the same amateur that rides him today. It was just a fourth run over hurdles for the selection, who was a bumper winner on his only start in Ireland and is starting to realise that early potential for his new connections.
Race 7 No2 IRON BRIDGE (Nap)
Trainer: Jonjo O’Neill – Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr
IRON BRIDGE returns to a course where he landed a novices’ handicap chase and finished second in the Tim Molony Chase on his only other visit. He’s an old fashioned stamp of chaser typical of the horses that represent his owners, and though having had training issues is now in good heart and poised for a big run.
BEVERLEY
Race 3 No3 BAYSIDE (Nap)
Trainer: Rod Millman – Jockey: Lewis Edmunds
BAYSIDE brings a promising earning first effort to the table and is going to have learned plenty from that Bath run on her long haul from the West Country. The Cracksman filly represents a stable that can produce precocious juveniles and she’s bred to be speedy.
Race 4 No8 TIRIAC (Each Way)
Trainer: Paul Midgley – Jockey: Barry McHugh
TIRIAC found his forte on the all-weather with two successes at Newcastle after spending his entire career being campaigned on turf. He was easy to back when reappearing at that course, but catches the eye on a return to Beverley where he looked unlucky in running last September.
SOUTHWELL
Race 6 No5 ROGUE CITATION (Nap)
Trainer: Ed Bethell – Jockey: Kevin Stott
ROGUE CITATION got home by the skin of her teeth on a second career start here in the autumn. The first two pulled clear and the fact she attracted plenty of support mirrors the high regard in which she’s held by her trainer. Better things are expected of her this year.
Race 7 No5 SEVEN FIRES
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: George Bass
Sioux Nation filly SEVEN FIRES has shown gritty determination in her two successes this season and is well drawn for her hat-trick attempt. She’s in a better race, but needs respecting in her clash with BAREFOOT BEACH.
