Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open because of a wrist injury he suffered during his first-round match against Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona Open in April.
He hurt his wrist while reaching for a difficult shot during a long rally, which put too much pressure on the joint and caused pain. Although he finished the match and won in straight sets, the injury made it difficult for him to play at his best.
Medical tests later showed that his wrist needed more time to heal, so he withdrew from the Barcelona Open before his second-round match against Tomas Machac to begin his recovery.
The Cincinnati Open tournament organizers posted on social media, wishing world no 2 a speedy recovery. “We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible”.
If Alcaraz regains full fitness, he is expected to return later this season for some of the ATP Tour’s biggest events.
His schedule could include the Shanghai Masters in China from October 7 to 18 , the Paris Masters in France from November 2 to 8 , and the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, from November 15 to 22, provided he qualifies for the season-ending championship.
Alcaraz has competed in the Cincinnati Open four times since making his debut in 2021 and won the title once, claiming his maiden Cincinnati Open crown in 2025.
