EPSOM DOWNS
Race 2 BETFRED BLUE RIBAND TRIAL (Listed)
No6 SAXON STREET
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: William Buick
No surprise to see the Coolmore runner NEW ZEALAND carded as favourite for this Derby trial but I like the look of SAXON STREET at a bigger price. The Saxon Warrior colt saw out the mile well when scoring on his only start at Chelmsford in December. He’s going to relish the extra yardage today, and is in the right hands to remain unbeaten.
Race 3 No5 RATHGAR (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: Tom Marquand
Marquand shone on RATHGAR when the chestnut scored at Newbury a couple of weeks ago. He’s 4lb higher for that, but ran well to be narrowly denied in the corresponding race 12 months ago, and should go close if reproducing his recent form.
Race 4 No2 TOPTEAM (Nap)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
A gelding operation in the close season appears to have assisted TOPTEAM who got the job done in tidy fashion when returning at Kempton. He has good form on grass, having won three of six starts on the surface, and is a well balanced individual who shouldn’t be fazed by the undulating switchback course.
Race 5 No2 MONTAGUE MENACE
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Balding and Murphy can again be on the money with MONTAGUE MENACE who looked a new broom in the way he came back to win at Lingfield, and in the process landing some good bets. Soft ground wasn’t his bag last year, but this faster than good terrain should prove ideal.
YARMOUTH
Race 5 No4 LADY MARIKO (Nap)
Trainer: Dylan Cunha – Jockey: David Egan
This is not the best card for betting, but LADY MARIKO looks an exception. She made the perfect return at Kempton and has ground conditions and 1400 metres trip to suit.
SOUTHWELL
Race 3 No3 DANCE OF ANGELS
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: Nicola Currie
Candy can continue his bright start to the season by taking out this fillies’ novice with DANCE OF ANGELS. The daughter of Harry Angela troubled the judge on both 2025 starts at Sandown and Nottingham and has done well through the winter. She has a better chance than her price indicates.
Race 4 No10 NIGHT BEAR (Nap)
Trainer: Tony Carroll – Jockey: Jack Doughty
Although he’s proving difficult to win with, this can be NIGHT BEAR’s day. The selection has just a head to find with JACK ANDREA from a recent race at this track and though weighted to turn the tables can be backed at twice the price of his rivals. The only worry is that his sole win on sand happened three and a half years ago.
LINGFIELD PARK
Race 2 No10 VELD (Each Way)
Trainer: Hughie Morrison – Jockey: Callum Hutchinson
With three runners making up a quarter of the field it’s hard not to think Morrison means business. Two are unraced but VELD is a big, scopey sort who made the podium on the second of two career starts at Wolverhampton. Though beating only one home that day she has learned from it.
Race 6 No2 PENFOLDS GARAGE (Nap)
Trainer: M Pattinson – Jockey: William Carson
PENFOLDS GARAGE has gone 422 in his three starts this year and would be a deserving winner. He’s a past winner at just shorter than this distance and looks a more consistent operator than in the past.
Race 7 No4 LABICHE (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: Rab Havlin
LABICHE struggled to get out of his own way in three starts last year but now enters the handicap arena having had time to strengthen up. He’s taking on a long odds-on favourite but can cause him problems as the other side of your Exacta ticket.
