Russell had dominated earlier in the weekend, taking Sprint Race victory and securing pole position for Sunday’s main race, but momentum shifted as the intra-team rivalry intensified across both sessions.

The Sprint itself featured a contentious duel, with Antonelli expressing frustration over team radio, prompting intervention from team principal Toto Wolff to calm the situation.

On Sunday, Antonelli converted his pace into a fourth consecutive Grand Prix win, moving to a 43-point lead over Russell after five rounds of the championship.

“Right now, it’s his [Antonelli’s] to lose. So many points ahead,” Russell said.

“I don’t want to be stood here talking like that. It is, of course, frustrating, and I want to be in that fight. Hopefully, the luck turns.”

Russell later acknowledged Antonelli had effectively seized the early title initiative, while stating he remains confident the pair will race cleanly going forward and that he still enjoyed the competitive battle despite his retirement setback.

“We know how we need to race,” he said. “I think we both had it under control, and it was great because I really, really enjoyed it, personally.

“It was exceptionally difficult on this circuit to break that one-second overtake mode.

“It was just challenging. In these cold conditions, the only way you get grip is by pushing the tyres to get the temperature, so you’re just spreading that needle of how hard you push, but knowing the consequences are quite big.”
