The 19-year-old’s strong form has surprised many in the paddock, especially after Russell was widely expected to lead Mercedes’ charge this season because of his experience and consistent performances during the 2025 campaign.

Button admitted the situation would not be easy for Russell, particularly with the expectations placed on him as the senior driver within the team.

“It’s tough when your younger team-mate is that fast and consistent as well,” Button told Sky F1.

The former world champion explained that Russell previously had the advantage of racing alongside seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, where any strong result against Hamilton was viewed positively. Now, however, the pressure has shifted.

Button said Russell would feel expected to beat Antonelli regularly because of his greater experience and status within the team. He added that it was difficult for any established driver to see a teenage team-mate producing such strong performances so quickly.

Despite Antonelli’s recent momentum, Button believes Russell has the mentality and confidence to respond strongly over the coming races.

“We all know George quite well, and he’s confident,” Button said. “I wouldn’t worry too much. I think he’s going to take the fight to Kimi.”

The next opportunity for Russell to respond comes at the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on 24 May. The circuit holds positive memories for Russell after he claimed one of his two victories there last season, and Mercedes will hope that experience can help him close the gap to Antonelli in what is becoming one of Formula 1’s most fascinating intra-team battles.
