Heading into the summer hiatus with six grand prix victories, the teenage prodigy has silenced skeptics who doubted his ability to handle championship pressure.
Antonelli previously etched his name into the record books as the youngest driver ever to top the standings following back-to-back triumphs in China and Japan.
The dynamic at Mercedes has shifted dramatically since Lewis Hamilton’s high-profile departure to Ferrari. While many expected George Russell to automatically take the reins as the team’s primary driver – especially after he mentored Antonelli during the rookie’s debut season – the duo is now locked in a fierce head-to-head title fight. Russell currently sits third in the driver standings, trailing his younger teammate by 59 points.
Reflecting on the mounting intra-team friction at the Silver Arrows, Fittipaldi insists the escalating rivalry is precisely what the sport needs, praising the excitement created when an emerging star fearlessly challenges the grid’s established leaders.
“Kimi Antonelli is doing a fantastic job, and he’s showing his potential,” Fittipaldi told F1.com.
“I’ve known him since he was racing in karts many, many years ago. I know Marco, his father, very well, and I know the family well. Marco even coached my son Emmo in F4. It’s a great Italian family from Bologna – good people, racing people.
“I think for the sport it’s good to have a new boy on the block, you know? He’s only 19, and he can win the championship. He’s putting tremendous pressure on George Russell.
“George, again, has shown he’s strong. If George takes that pressure in a positive way, like he showed many times he can do, I think it will be very interesting for the fans. It’s going to be a dice for the rest of the championship.”
