Antonelli completed the 71-lap race behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, sharing the podium with two of the biggest names in modern Formula 1 as he celebrated an extraordinary achievement.

His championship victory also ended Italy’s 73-year wait for another Formula 1 world champion.

“We did it, we did it,” Antonelli exclaimed after climbing out of his Mercedes cockpit.

“Without Mercedes, without my family, I wouldn’t be here, so I’m very grateful for this moment.

“It will live forever. I’m speechless. I’m trying to process what has just happened.”

The young Italian admitted that sharing the podium with Verstappen and Hamilton made the occasion even more special.

“Of course, of course! You know it’s been an incredible season, and to share this podium with Max and Lewis is truly incredible,” he said.

“Looking forward to some more battles in the future.”
