QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL DAY 1

Race 1 No17 STAY WELL (Each Way)
Trainer: Hughie Morrison – Jockey: Hollie Doyle

ENFJAAR defends a two race unbeaten record in 2024 but for his efforts has taken a hike in the weights. Buoyed by the addition of a hood, he defied a 5lb penalty at York and comes here with his tail up. STAY WELL is one that could outrun his price and has a swing in the weights with ENFJAAR from Chelmsford last month. If working out as it should, there won’t be much between them in the rematch. BYSTANDER bounced back with a decisive success at Newcastle but all three of his wins have happened on the all-weather and he’s not the same force on grass. WADACRE GOMEZ hails from a stable that has excelled in handicap at this meeting, and having prevailed in two of his last three starts needs respecting.

Prediction: 1st STAY WELL, 2nd Enfjaar, 3rd Bystander, 4th Wadacre Gomez

Race 2 HKJC WORLD POOL VINTAGE STAKES (Group 2)

No12 THE PARTHENON
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore

Kingman colt THE PARTHENON was unbackable when opening his account at Gowran Park which represented a step forward from his first offering at the Curragh. He relished the extra distance and must have pleased his connections to make this step into a Group 2. AN OUTLAW’S GRACE troubled the judge in a Group race in France and that Prix Robert Papin effort puts him tight in the mix. Godolphin’s AOMORI CITY lost his unbeaten record to Whistelacket in the July Stakes at Newmarket, but the way he kept on at the finish suggests he’s going to love the extra furlong here.

Race 3 HKJC WORLD POOL LENNOX STAKES (Group 2)

No3 ENGLISH OAK
Trainer: Ed Walker – Jockey: James Doyle

KINROSS put in a rare poor run in the July Cup but is a super talent who could easily bounce back returned to seven furlongs. He’s close in the betting with the Godolphin-owned hat-trick seeker NOBLE DYNASTY who put down a marker for this with his taking success in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket. TIBER FLOW took out to Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock but probably needs to up his game if he’s to win this. The vote goes to ENGLISH OAK, who landed a gamble in the manner of a rapidly improving horse at Royal Ascot and can uphold the high status afforded him by his trainer with Doyle an eye-taking booking and the right man to get him home.

Race 4 AL SHAQAB GOODWOOD CUP (Group 1)

No5 KYPRIOS (Nap)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore

Any doubts that KYPRIOS hadn’t retained his old ability have been quashed by the Galileo entire’s three 2024 triumphs at Navan, Leopardstown and in the Gold Cup at Ascot. His courageous success over Trawlerman last month was an eleventh from 15 starts and if repeated will grant the chestnut the recapturing of the race he won in 2022 but through injury was unable to contest 12 months ago. The warm spell is not such good news for TRUESHAN who posted a comfortable success in Listed company at Sandown but will encounter faster conditions on which he’s not in his comfort zone. SWEET WILLIAM is closely matched with the last named horse and on his third to Kyprios in the Gold Cup comes into the reckoning. COLTRANE holds Sweet William on his Sagaro Stakes success earlier in the year but needs a personal best in order to take the spoils.

Race 5 No16 MISS ATTITUDE (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey:

MISS ATTITUDE crucially missed the break in a Racing League race at Yarmouth last week which put her immediately on the back foot. Her rider didn’t panic, and in getting the mare into the frame showed how unlucky she was not to win. Importantly she was settled and finished off her race strongly. She’s done very well physically, and granted the rub of the green on a track that will suit can definitely get into the shake-up.

Race 6 No10 JOUNCY
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy

JOUNCY is among a handful that can win this after upping his game in a narrow defeat at Kempton. The Wootton Bassett colt was heavily backed that day, and although not enjoying the best of the draw should make a good fist of it against CARRADOS and MUKABER who enter the fray with similar credentials.

Race 7 No4 STRUTTING
Trainer: John Gosden – Kieran Shoemark

Frankel filly STRUTTING posted a career-best when second in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot and looks assured of a good run for her top connections. She can take the spoils at the main expense of CIRCE, who impressed in a recent win at Newbury, while at longer odds QUEEN’S REIGN can get into the argument.
