Neil Morrice shares all of his best bets and tips for Saturday’s racing coming your way from Doncaster , Kempton Park ,Stratford , Uttoxeter and Newcastle on 29 March 2025.
DONCASTER
Race 1 No7 KAMAKAMELEON (Each Way)
Trainer: Dylan Cunha – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
A huge amount of guesswork is necessary in the traditional first race of the Flat season, with no form to go on, but Kameko colt KAMAKAMELION takes the eye on pedigree in the historic Brocklesby, for a South African trainer who can ready one.
Race 2 No16 PROMETHEAN (Each Way)
Trainer: David Menuisier – Jockey: Enzo Crublet
PROMETHEAN hails from a stable that knows how to win a Lincoln, with the grey fancied to take away a cheque in this consolation race known as the Spring Mile. He had the 2024 season interrupted by a bruised foot but it’s interesting that his shrewd trainer gave him back-to-back outings over a mile and a quarter here last autumn, while the return to a mile shouldn’t be an issue in a race that is always strongly run.
Race 3 No4 IBERIAN
Trainer: Charlie Hills – Jockey: Jason Watson
One time Classic hope IBERIAN is a very interesting runner in this Listed race on his second outing since undergoing wind surgery. The 2023 Champagne Stakes winner didn’t manage to build on his good 2yo form when in the ruck in last year’s 2000 Guineas and Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, but he was a snug scorer on AW debut in a Southwell Class2 before Christmas, a race that’s formed a gentle stepping stone at which to tee himself up for better things.
Race 4 No3 DANCING GEMINI (Nap)
Trainer: Roger Teal – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
Starting his season back at a mile, DANCING GEMINI can demonstrate that he’s more comfortable at the shorter distance at which he was so unluckily beaten in last season’s French 2000 Guineas. Teal’s stable star failed to get the trip when just out of the money in the Derby, and after underwhelming in the Coral-Eclipse ended the campaign with a solid run behind Charyn in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. He brings a class element to the table, and is ready for the task at hand.
Race 5 WILLIAM HILL LINCOLN HANDICAP
No10 TOIMY SON (Each Way)
Trainer: David Menuisier – Jockey: Warren Fentiman
The first leg of the Spring Double will start with a warm favourite in THUNDER RUN who has been the subject of a steady gamble. He was a regular money earner last year and has a high draw, where I hope most of the main protagonists are berthed. His stablemate NATIVE WARRIOR takes the eye on only an eighth career start, while any support for MR PROFESSOR would be of interest, granted he won on his first run of the 2024 season and is having a first outing for his trainer. Billy Loughnane’s mount OLIVER SHOW has the advantage of a recent run while a very solid contender is MIDNIGHT GUN, who is by Kingman out of Group 1 winning mare Sky Lantern. The one I like at a price is TOIMY SON, whose trainer won the race two years ago. The selection was a three times winner in France, and after joining Menuisier graduated to land a valuable Class2 at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. He troubled the judge in a handful of handicaps at the festival meetings, and brings very strong form to the table.
Prediction: 1st TOIMY SON, 2nd Thunder Run, 3rd Midnight Gun, 4th Mr Professor, 5th Native Warrior, 6th Oliver Show
KEMPTON PARK
Race 2 No7 MOUNT ATLAS
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Hayley Turner
MOUNT ATLAS enjoyed a bountiful 2024 campaign in which he landed a Redcar maiden and a Class2 handicap at Ascot’s King George fixture. He was then trained towards a valuable race at Newmarket in which he found only the very impressive Sun God his master. He’s been popular in the ante post market for today’s race and ran well on his only all-weather start at this venue.
Race 3 No7 ROSE PRICK (Each Way)
Trainer: Ed Walker – Jockey: Saffie Osborne
In the Listed Snowdrop Stakes ROSE PRICK might be the one to cause problems for odds-on Soprano. The No Nay Never mare hasn’t won since her two-year-old days, but in a select 2024 campaign picked up some black type in a Listed contest at this track, whilst finishing second in a Class2 handicap at Ascot. She was also in the money in the Listed Fleur De Lys at Lingfield and has thrived for a break since that mid November effort
Race 6 No3 CAJETAN
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: Edward Greatrex
CAJETAN will be looking for a strong gallop, and if getting it can stamp his authority at the end of this 1200 metres sprint. He’s enjoyed mixed fortunes here, and was unsuited by a sedate pace on his latest visit. He has however thrived for a short break and looked in good order in his winding up gallop for this earlier in the week.
STRATFORD
Race 1 No6 ST PANCRAS (Nap)
Trainer: Toby Lawes – Jockey: Kevin Brogan
If turning up,in the same mood as when finishing second in the Grade 2 Adonis Hurdle at Kempton, ST PANCRAS should be too good for these. He’s progressed from race to race since being sent hurdling and looks like a horse with more to offer.
Race 5 No9 SIAM PARK
Trainer: Joe Tizzard – Jockey: Brendan Powell
SIAM PARK appreciated a return to two miles and jumped well to notch a first success over fences at Taunton, but should not be compromised by a move back up the distance ladder at a course that should suit his racing style.
UTTOXETER
Race 3 No1 BLUE LAS (Nap)
Trainer: Neil Mulholland – Jockey: Dylan Johnston
BLUE LAS is conceding weight to the field in this mares’ handicap hurdle, but looks an attractive betting proposition as the winner of two bumpers and a maiden hurdle who makes only a fourth outing over jumps. She was far from disgraced in a Grade2 mares’ novices’ hurdle at Sandown, won by Hollygrove Cha Cha, where she stayed on well up the final hill.
NEWCASTLE
Race 7 No8 TOMORROW DAY (Nap)
Trainer: Mark Usher – Jockey: Kaiya Fraser
On a hard meeting for punting the inclination is to wait for TOMORROW DAY, who though trained in Berkshire has made all but one of his last fourteen starts here at Gosforth Park. Not only is he a five times winner at the track, but he’s made the frame on seven of his other eight starts, and while the cash that came for him went west last time, he can recover those losses with interest.
