After a day in which we saw the old staying king Stradivarius retired, have we seen a new king crowned in Kyprios?
Let’s take a look at what’s in store on Day 4 of Royal Ascot.
14:30 – Group 3 Albany Stakes 6f – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
This selection is one that I really like after her debut win at the Hollywoodbets race day at the Curragh back in April, and that is MEDITATE.
She followed up on that with a nice win in a Group 3 at Naas.
This daughter of No Nay Never has a huge future ahead of her and expect a big run from her today.
Queen Olly is one that could well outrun her odds after impressing on her debut. The owners could do with a change of luck this week.
15:05 – Group 1 Commonwealth Cup 6f – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
This is a race in which I think my selection PERFECT POWER is tailor-made for this distance, and in my opinion is overpriced even at around 4/1.
A horse that possesses an electric turn of foot and the drop back down to 6f, after experimenting with 7f to 1m this season, will be a huge plus.
Already a dual Group 1 winner over 6f, I am very confident that he will be making with three wins in Group 1s after today.
15:40 – Duke of Cambridge Stakes Handicap 1m4f – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
A wide open staying contest but someone has to win, and I think STAYS WELL could well be up to running a huge race at approximately 16/1.
Back-to-back seconds this season at Kempton and Redcar, travelling well both times, and the step back up to 1m4f could show him in a better light still.
Another one that looks to have a solid chance if ready to run after nine months off the track is decent bumper performer and flat winner EVER PRESENT. Last seen wining a 23-runner handicap at Leopardstown, he represents great each way value at roughly 18/1.
16:20 – Group 1 Coronation Stakes 1m – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
The drift on current favourite (was odds on, now 11/4) is a worry if you are an Inspiral fan. She comes in here after not being seen since last October, but if she has trained well and is ready to go she is a huge player.
But I will be siding with a horse who’s half-sister and sister were both successful in this very race, and that is DISCOVERIES.
Her half-sister Alpine Star and sister Alpha Centauri were both victorious in this race. She was last seen finishing 7th in the 1000 Guineas but might well have needed the run, and with her families/trainer’s record in this race, it is a run you would be willing to overlook at the current prices.
17:00 – Sandringham Stakes Handicap 1m – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
The discrepancy in the prices from current favourite Heredia and the horse she only just beat at York last time out is madness. One is 7/2 and one is 20/1 – I suggest ESPRESSO at the bigger of those prices.
As I said she, was just pipped at York last time out, but before that she was a back-to-back winner over 7f and looks like one who will welcome the step up to 1m. If she progresses again, there is no reason why she won’t be bang in it at the finish.
17:35 – Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes 1m4f – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
CHANGINGOFTHEGAURD is a horse I like and am willing to forget his run in the Derby as he ran as well as can be expected.
Currently second favourite at around 2/1, I can easily see the money coming for him and going off clear favourite and get back to winning ways after a maiden win at Dundalk. That’s on top of his Chester Vase win.
18:10 – Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes Handicap 5f – 2022 Royal Ascot Day 4
Another huge 5f handicap to try solve at the end of day for of Royal Ascot.
We will have two selections again and the first one will be the Andrew Balding trained NYMPADORA.
Came back with a good 2nd at Chester last time out and back on a straight 5f will not be a problem.
The next one will be LIL GIFF.
Comes in here on the back of two 6f wins and the fact he stays further than 5f is never a bad thing in big handicaps, especially with a stiff 5f at Ascot.
