Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets and tips for Thursday’s race meetings at Sandown Park, Yarmouth, Newbury and Doncaster on 21/07/2022.
SANDOWN PARK – 21/07/2022
Race 2 No6 GOLDEN SPEECH (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
GOLDEN SPEECH has been easy to back on both career starts in races won by his own connections. But after a narrow defeat to One Nation at this course last time he now finds himself with the boot on the other foot. The Dubawi colt is very much the main arrow of his operation, and rates a worthy favourite to take the spoils.
Race 3 No10 TAGLINE
Trainer: Rod Millman – Jockey: Jamie Spencer
There are some potentially smart previous winners in this Listed race but the one with outstanding form claims is West Country raider TAGLINE. The daughter of Havana Grey chased home the ultra smart Lezoo at this level at Newmarket and was then beaten three and a half lengths by Mawj in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at the July meeting, with Lezoo again in front of her. If she can run to that form level she can stave off the challenges of once raced scorers Bet Me, Dance In The Grass and Lady Alara, though Fairy Cross could be the one to pose an even bigger threat.
YARMOUTH – 21/07/2022
Race 1 No6 CABEZA DE LLAVE (Nap)
Trainer: Michael Attwater – Jockey: William Carson
CABEZA DE LLAVE has progressed in each start of his career, running seven races in the hands of the same jockey. The chestnut has seemingly been happier since switching to turf, scoring at Windsor and being denied by a short head at Bath. He’s competing from a handy mark on a move up to six furlongs, and can make it a winning first visit to this track.
Race 3 No1 OMNISCIENT
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Darragh Keenan
When sent handicapping and moved up the distance ladder OMNISCIENT proved a costly entity at Wolverhampton. There were no obvious excuses for that defeat, but he’s now asked to travel slightly further, and under an interesting jockey booking can get the better of the lightly-raced Swashbuckler.
NEWBURY – 21/07/2022
Race 2 No14 PREPENSE (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
Kingman filly PREPENSE could be the pick of the Newmarket challengers for a maiden in which most of the top stables are represented. She’s shown above average ability in her work, and even though her trainer has yet to strike a chord with his juveniles, she can prove an exception.
Race 4 No3 ONTHEBUNNY
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass
ONTHEBUNNY put in a couple of good earning runs before proving easy to back and underwhelming at Nottingham. She’s better than she showed on that occasion, and with the step up to six furlongs a help, can open her account on this nursery debut.
DONCASTER – 21/07/2022
Race 5 No1 ACHNAMARA
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: Franny Norton
ACHNAMARA has struggled in recent Class2s at Royal Ascot and Haydock but could easily bounce back at a course where he was narrowly beaten on his only visit. The Kodiac colt is at his best when allowed to stride on, and with no obvious pacesetters against him might get onto an easy lead.
Race 6 No2 EAGLE’S WAY
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Luke Morris
EAGLE’S WAY comes with the classic Prescott tag of a horse that has made giant strides granted a big step up the distance ladder. The chestnut never started less than 50-1 in his three runs to gain a mark, but on his first outing at three was backed into 6-4 before romping home over a mile and a quarter at Brighton. Remaining at that trip, he has strong claims to follow-up.
Race 7 No1 WILLEM TWEE (Nap)
Trainer: James Fanshawe – Jockey: Daniel Muscutt
WILLEM TWEE should prove a bet worth waiting for in the nightcap. The Ribchester colt looked unlucky to be grabbed by Monaadah at Haydock and then made no mistake at Doncaster which was his first outing on grass. He’s very well regarded at Pegasus Stables, and should make no mistake.
