14/04/2022 – Thursday’s Best Bets and Tips

Neil Morrice outlines his best bets and tips for Thursday’s British meetings at Newmarket, Cheltenham, Ripon, Exeter and Bath on 14/04/2022.

NEWMARKET – 14/04/2022

Race 1 No6 WODETON
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: David Probert

Owners Thurloe Thoroughbreds were on the mark with a nice newcomer at Windsor on Monday, and in WODETON they have an equally promising individual who can follow suit. While not quite able to go forward from his excellent first run on Polytrack last year, the gelding has done well physically, and has worked with aplomb for this seasonal return.

Race 5 No6 SONNY LISTON
Trainer: Charles Hills – Jockey: Marco Ghiani

This looks a good renewal of the Feilden Stakes and one that can fall to the least experienced runner, SONNY LISTON. The Lawman colt created a favourable impression when storming home on his mid-summer debut at Sandown but then endured training issues. However, the vibes point to him being more than ready for this class jump, in which Masekela is probably the one he has to most worry about.

Race 7 No2 TWILIGHT CALLS (Nap)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: David Probert

TWILIGHT CALLS doesn’t always find as much off the bridle as it looks as if he will, which can make him a risky proposition, but the Twilight Son gelding brings a touch of class to this hot handicap that can prove an essential ingredient in his path to glory. He will travel like a dream, and as an older and stronger sprinter can now demonstrate the ability to quicken and put his race to bed.

CHELTENHAM – 14/04/2022

Race 6 No1 THE GLANCING QUEEN (Nap)
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Tom Cannon

THE GLANCING QUEEN should find these calmer waters than the ferociously contested Plate in which she dropped away to finish seventh at last month’s Festival. She faces a fascinating challenger from Ireland in Alice April, but if returning to her earlier form should make short work of that foe.

Race 7 No9 NOTHINGTOCHANCE
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Tom Cannon

The King/Cannon combo can take out the nightcap, and make it a double, with the promising NOTHINGTOCHANCE. The Kayf Tara mare attracted support when beating all but Magical Maggie on her Southwell debut and will be a lot more streetwise for this battle with mainly unraced opponents.

RIPON – 14/04/2022

Race 2 No9 BAY BREEZE
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Allan

BAY BREEZE ran in handicaps either side of breaking his duck in maiden company at Beverley. He earned in all but two of his ten starts, and can again trouble the judge on this seasonal return.

Race 4 No1 SKYCUTTER (Nap)
Trainer: Phil Kirby – Jockey: Ryan Sexton

SKYCUTTER returns to the Flat after being ambitiously campaigned in juvenile hurdles. Successful on his first two outings over jumps, he rounded-off with a solid midfield finish behind Brazil in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. It shouldn’t be long before he returns to the good form he displayed on the Flat when joining this stable last summer.

EXETER – 14/04/2022

Race 3 No10 KOLISI (Nap)
Trainer: David Pipe – Jockey: Fergus Gillard

Former useful Flat performer KOLISI finds himself in a big field but holding outstanding claims as he bids to polish off a quick fire hat-trick. The four-year-old’s smooth successes at Hereford and Taunton came after a wind operation, which can again play its part in assisting the Nap in shrugging off a double penalty.

Race 4 No2 KAUTO THE KING
Trainer: Colin Tizzard – Jockey: Brendan Powell

Carded to go off the outsider of the five runners, KAUTO THE KING will be a danger to all if bring his A-game back to the table. A sound jumper that likes to race prominently, he can put behind him a disappointing recent effort at Newbury with the Tizzard’s stable jockey back on board.

Race 7 No6 PARK THIS ONE
Trainer: Jamie Snowden – Jockey: Gavin Sheehan

A market check is advised on the well related Bertie Wooster, but the racecourse experience of PARK THIS ONE can sway things in that one’s favour. The former Irish pointer shaped well on debut at Hereford, and could know too much for his rival on this occasion.

BATH – 14/04/2022

Race 5 No10 SILVERDALE (Nap)
Trainer: Jonny Portman – Jockey: Rob Hornby

SILVERDALE took home a cheque in all three 2021 outings and with that progressive profile is the one to beat in this novice race for distaffers. Two of her efforts happened on Grade 1 tracks (Newbury and Goodwood), and she’s been working well ahead of this return to the fray.

Race 6 No7 KALAMITY KITTY
Trainer: Ed De Giles – Jockey: Trevor Whelan

Cityscape filly KALAMITY KITTY is making her mark at the basement level of handicaps and has sound claims to complete a hat-trick in this stayers’ race. She started the ball rolling at Ffos Las last summer, and returned from her winter break to gamely deliver on the Kempton Polytrack. She is in a good place, and gets a marginal vote over Master Grey
