ERDENALI, Saint-Cloud, March 29th

Caravaggio colt ERDENALI was a most impressive winner of the 1600 metres maiden for trainer Francis Graffard. In the Aga Khan silks he looked ready to do himself justice, but at the finish he appeared to be covering as much ground in one stride under Mickael Barzalona as his rivals could in two. He streaked clear to score in a hack canter, and while the strength of the opposition is yet to be deciphered there’s no doubt in my mind that this is a potential Group horse that I feel lucky to have been there in person to observe.

RED CHARLIE Curragh, April 19th

Backers of RED CHARLIE can count themselves extremely unlucky not to have collected when he contested the seven furlongs handicap at the Curragh on Sunday. The gamble of the meeting ran into a wall of horses with little more than a furlong to run and dropped back to last, but when switched left to the rail he absolutely flew, making up six lengths and needing just another stride to prevail. These losses are surely only lent.

ZAVATERI Newbury, April 18th

Triple Group winner ZAVATERI was held up in customary style in this Group 3 which over the years as the Greenham Stakes has hosted a number of top class winners, including Mill Reef and Frankel. The chestnut was on the move when approaching the final furlong his progress was halted as market rival Albert Einstein held him in and bumped him. All the while race leader Alparslan enjoyed an uninterrupted passage, and by the time Zavateri found racing real estate the bird had flown. Not much was made of the interference in the press but it probably affected the result, as had Zavateri been granted a clear passage he might have won. Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton hasn’t stated where her colt goes next but I hope she elects to head to Newmarket this Saturday week, and fora tilt at the 2000 Guineas.

CRAZEE ICON Newmarket, April 14th

CRAZEE ICON started favourite for this 3yo only handicap in which she was held up on the stands side. When asked to close she didn’t pick up instantly but on meeting the rising ground out of the Dip put in her best work at the finish to just fail to make the frame. The Sixties Icon filly had her share of bad luck last season, especially when beaten at Chester, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the course trainer Andrew Balding’s elects to run her next.

MISS ATTITUDE Bath, April 5th

MISS ATTITUDE was ridden for luck in the Listed sprint over 1000 metres which in her case the best way. Rob Hornby had a full mare under him a furlong and a half out but not once but twice she was stopped in her tracks. Beaten a length and a quarter into fourth, she rates a winner without a penalty but essential to her chance in future races is her need for fast ground.
