With 27 career pole positions, he remains behind only Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen among current drivers.

However, Leclerc explained that the characteristics of the 2026 machinery have changed the rules of engagement in qualifying.

“It’s a lot down to understanding these new cars,” he said. “They are very strange in qualifying. In the past, one of my strengths in Q3 was taking massive risks to extract more.”

That approach, he revealed, now comes at a cost.

“When you do that now, you start confusing the engine side of things, and you lose a lot more than what you gain.”

Instead of delivering one explosive lap in Q3, Leclerc has had to focus on consistency throughout the session. Across the opening two rounds in Australia and China, he secured fourth place on the grid both times—solid, but short of his usual front-row threat.

“Consistency pays off more,” he added. “In China, I found my rhythm from Q1 to Q3. It’s less exciting because you can’t push like you want, but it brings you closer to the guys in front.”

The shift highlights a broader challenge for drivers adapting to the new regulations, where precision now outweighs raw aggression.

Attention now turns to the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka International Racing Course, scheduled for 27 to 29 March. As the third round of the season, it follows races in Australia and China, with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia removed from the calendar.

For Leclerc, Suzuka will offer another test of patience over instinct – where controlling risk, rather than embracing it, may be the key to unlocking performance.
