One of the reasons why video review technology is being introduced is because, during a fourth-round match between Sonay Kartal and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at Wimbledon 2025 , an umpire made a mistake.

During an important point, a line call was made that looked wrong, but the game continued because the officials did not change the decision. This mistake affected the game and made the players feel frustrated.

Because there was no video review at that time, the wrong decision was not changed, even though later replays showed it may have been incorrect.

Pavlyuchenkova went on to win the match, defeating Sonay Kartal in straight sets, 7–6, 6–4, to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2025.

The introduction of video review technology has brought several important changes. Players can now challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, such as “not-up,” “foul shot,” or “touch.” They can ask for a review when a point ends, when they stop play immediately, or right after a point is finished in cases like hindrance.

There is no limit to how many times players can request a review.

Scoreboards on all courts will also show clear signals for live electronic line calls, such as “out” and “fault,” and this will apply to all matches, including the qualifying rounds.

The women’s doubles competition will now start one day later than before, beginning on Thursday, 2 July.

The finals weekend schedule from last year will stay the same in 2026. The men’s and women’s doubles finals will start at 1pm, followed by the women’s and men’s singles finals at 4pm on the second Saturday and Sunday.

The Chief Executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Sally Bolton, briefed the media with excitement about the new video review technology and the preparations being made to introduce it.

“Each year we look for ways to evolve and enhance Wimbledon, both on and off the court.

“Through various enhancements ranging from a new public dining offer, the introduction of Video Review technology, and improved accessibility for live Electronic Line Calling, we want to deliver the best possible experience for everyone at Wimbledon.”
