Mikel Arteta has insisted he remains “very happy” with Eberechi Eze, despite the midfielder’s inconsistent form since joining Arsenal.
Eze made a lively start to life in north London after his move from Crystal Palace, but recent performances have raised questions about his ability to adapt to Arsenal’s tactical demands.
The 27-year-old’s creativity and flair were among the main reasons the Gunners brought him in, yet his influence has dipped as he adjusts to the intensity and expectations of a title-challenging side.
In Arsenal’s recent 1–0 win over Fulham, many supporters hoped Eze, starting in place of the injured Martin Odegaard, would help unlock the home defence. However, his impact proved limited, with his usual creativity and drive failing to spark during his 61-minute stint on the pitch.
The spotlight has since grown sharper, particularly with Odegaard sidelined until November.
Eze has been asked to take on a greater creative role in Odegaard’s absence, a responsibility that mirrors his time as the focal point at Palace. But at Arsenal, where every touch is scrutinised, the challenge is far tougher.
Fans have called for Eze to deliver more consistent performances, while Arteta has continued to show faith in the England international.
Speaking after the win over Fulham, Arteta told Metro Sport: “He had his moments today, he put Viktor (Gyokeres) once or twice through in really good spaces and maybe if it finished in a goal it would’ve looked a bit different.
“But I’m very happy with what he’s doing and we can use him in different positions. Today we used him in that one and we can carry on trying to improve.”
Arteta’s backing underlines his belief that Eze can thrive once he fully settles into Arsenal’s system. The coming weeks will be key for the midfielder to prove he can shoulder the creative load and become a decisive force in Arsenal’s push for silverware.
