Terra Wortmann Open

Daniil Medvedev (3) 0.49 vs Alex Michelson 1.55

Joining that list is a true testament to the Russian’s powers of longevity. Medvedev was exceptional against Halys, firing 10 aces and winning 90% of his first-serve points. He hit 22 winners to just six unforced errors in one of his most dominant grass-court performances in ages. Medvedev hasn’t been at his indominable best of late, failing to reach a final since last year’s Indian Wells Masters. The Russian’s cagey counterpunching has been lapped by the more explosive on-court histrionics of Sinner and Alcaraz. Medvedev may enjoy this switch to the grass, which should allow him to win more cheap points on serve. Medvedev has improved immeasurably as a grass-court player these last few seasons, reaching back-to-back Wimbledon semifinals in the past two seasons. The 2022 Halle runner-up is in desperate need of a boost as he looks to reestablish himself as one of the world’s elite players.

Big-serving American Alex Michelson has looked excellent this week, taking down 5th seed Cerundolo in his opener before compounding Tsitsipas’ recent woes with a 7-6, 7-5 victory. The American used his whippy serve to great effect against the Greek, firing eight aces and winning 78% of his first-serve points. He just dominated the clutch moments, hitting 26 winners to 19 unforced errors to reach the final eight. Michelson started the year quite well, reaching the quarterfinals in Adelaide before producing a career- best Grand Slam performance in Melbourne (he reached the 4th round). He reached the semifinals at Delray Beach but struggled since then, losing five successive tour-level matches in a disastrous clay-court swing. The switch should come as a relief to the American. Michelson showed grass-court promise as a junior, winning the 2022 Wimbledon Boys’ doubles title (playing alongside Sebastian Gorzny). He reached back-to-back Newport finals in 2023 and 2024 and will be looking to boost his chances of a Wimbledon seeding this week (he is currently ranked 33rd).

The Verdict: Michelson to win in three at 4.4- Medvedev leads the head-to-head 1-0, winning via retirement at this year’s Indian Masters. This match has real upset potential. Medvedev has looked solid this week but has generally underwhelmed this season. Michelson’s aggressive serve and volleying skills make him a dark horse option in any grass-court event (even if he is yet to beyond the first round of Wimbledon).
