In a dramatic twist at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Red Bull faced a pit-stop fiasco that left fans and drivers stunned.
Both Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda were stranded during their tyre changes due to a malfunctioning traffic-light system on the Red Bull’s pit gantry, which failed to signal green despite all four tyres being swapped.
The issue forced the Red Bull to abandon their automated system mid-race, with the chief mechanic stepping in to manually release the cars.
Verstappen battled to a sixth-place finish, while Tsunoda secured valuable points for Red Bull, crossing the line in ninth.
Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, described the ordeal as unprecedented. “We had a nightmare with what appears to be a wiring loom fault in the pit gantry,” Horner said to reporters.
“The stops themselves were quick, around two seconds, but the drivers rely on those lights. When they didn’t change, it threw everything off.”
Horner explained that the problem surfaced during Verstappen’s first stop. “We thought maybe a button wasn’t pressed firmly enough,” he said. “But when it happened again within a minute, we knew something was seriously wrong.
“We switched to manual overrides, and the chief mechanic took over.”
Red Bull have placed the faulty equipment in quarantine for a thorough investigation, determined to prevent a repeat. “It’s a simple system, but this caught us out,” Horner added. “We’re digging deep to ensure it’s fixed before the next race.”
The Formula 1 season charges on with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where teams will tackle 50 laps of the 6.174-kilometre Jeddah Corniche Circuit on Sunday, April 20.
