Cameron Norrie produced one of his finest Wimbledon performances to defeat American 12th seed Frances Tiafoe in four sets and book his place in the third round.
The former British number one came from behind to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in a high-quality contest that thrilled the Court One crowd.
Once ranked as high as world number eight, Norrie has slipped to 61st due to injury and a dip in form, but showed impressive resilience and shot-making to turn the match around. “When I was in the top 10, everything was automatic,” Norrie reflected. “Now I’m enjoying my tennis more than ever. Being the underdog today, I felt I was playing for free.”
The turning point came late in the fourth set. After surrendering a break lead, Norrie dug deep to break Tiafoe again and serve out the match – his second four-set win of the tournament after defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in round one. It’s only the second time Norrie has reached the third round or beyond at Wimbledon, but this performance suggests he could go further.
In contrast, Katie Boulter saw her campaign come to an abrupt end, losing 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 1-6 to Argentine lucky loser Solana Sierra. Fresh from a standout first-round win over top-10 seed Paula Badosa, expectations were high for the British number two but after taking the opening set in a tense tiebreak, Boulter’s level dropped sharply.
Double faults and inconsistent serving plagued her game, while 21-year-old Sierra grew in confidence and took full control of the final two sets. Despite the home support, Boulter couldn’t recover, as Sierra – who originally lost in qualifying – completed the upset.
The loss marks a missed opportunity for Boulter, who was considered one of Britain’s strongest hopes in the women’s draw. For Norrie, though, momentum is building as he aims to replicate or better his 2022 semi-final run.
