Selected 1st and 2nd Round Matches- 26th- 27th August

1ST Round- 26th August

Marta Kostyuk (27) 0.47 vs Katie Boulter 1.65

She came out of hibernation in Montreal, picking up an impressive trio of victories against Vondrousova, Kasatkina and Kessler (all in three sets). She had to call time in her Montreal quarterfinal clash, injuring her wrist while trailing Elena Rybakina. Will she recover in time for this potentially tricky first-round tie? This has been a tough old season for Katie Boulter. The Brit enjoyed an excellent 2024 campaign, winning titles in San Diego and Nottingham while finishing runner-up in Hong Kong. She has struggled to emulate that form this campaign, bringing a 10-14 tour-level record in these championships. She broke a three-match losing streak in Cleveland, going 1-4 during the North American hardcourt precursors. She has battled with chronic back pain and has just lost a bit of pop in her serve.

The Verdict: Kostyuk to win in straight-sets at 1.05– Boulter leads the head-to-head 1-0, coming from behind to win last year’s San Diego Open final. Boulter was flying high then, and this will be an entirely different proposition. Kostyuk looked rejuvenated in Montreal and should have too much court-craft for Boulter (provided that wrist issue doesn’t flare up).

1st Round- 26th August

Sofia Kenin (26) 0.69 vs Ashlynn Krueger 1.13

Former Aussie Open champ Sofia Kenin will go up against up-and-coming Ashlynn Kruger in this enticing all-American clash. Kenin enjoyed a promising start to her season, reaching quarterfinals in Hobart and Dubai before a season-best runner-up finish in Charleston. But she has faded dramatically since then, going 6-10 since that Charleston final. In fact, she brings a three-match losing streak into this event. The two-time Grand Slam finalist has suffered on the biggest stage in recent seasons, eliminated in the first round in five of her last seven hard-court slams. Meanwhile, Ashlynn Kruger continues to show signs of improvement, breaking into the top 30 for the first time this season. She has enjoyed a better hardcourt season than Kenin, finishing runner-up in Abu Dhabi while beating Rybakina en route to a 4th round finish in Miami. Usually a highly accomplished server, Kruger encountered some headwinds on her delivery in Cincy, coughing up 21 double faults in just two matches. She will need to eradicate those errors if she wishes to progress against the nuggety Kenin.

The Verdict: Krueger to win in three at 4– These two share the head-to-head spoils at one win apiece, with Kenin winning in Doha earlier this year. While these courts aren’t Aussie Open-fast, they are fast enough to give Kruger an advantage if she can get that first-serve percentage up. Krueger reached the 3rd round here last year, upsetting 21st seed Mirra Andreeva in the process.
