Preview : 2025 WTA Tour Grand Slam Tennis French Open Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France (Outdoor Clay) First Round Matches – Magdalena Frech vs Ons Jabeur

This has been a challenging campaign for 27-year-old Pole Magdalena Frech. A strategic operator, Frech reached her maiden final on the Prague clay last season (she would go on to win her first title at the Guadalajara Open in September).

But the nimble-footed Pole has struggled to find any rhythm this season and brings a 6-13 record into this event. She has been marginally better on clay, winning three of seven matches. The Pole has tried to adopt a more aggressive approach and it’s clearly still a work in progress. Former two-time Roland Garros quarterfinalist Ons Jabeur is an elite clay-court operator on her day. She won the Madrid Open in 2022 and finished runner-up in Rome in the same season. However, the crafty all-court player has suffered copious injury issues over the last few seasons and it has taken its toll. She has been underwhelming this campaign, going 0-2 in Madrid and Rome. However, the three-time Grand Slam finalist has undoubted BMT and could very well elevate her game this fortnight.

The Verdict: Jabeur to win in straight sets at 0.97- Jabeur leads the head-to-head 2-0, winning both of their matches back in 2023. I think Jabeur’s superior Grand Slam pedigree will come to the fore. Frech doesn’t possess overwhelming power and Jabeur tends to thrive against other strategic players. She will throw in plenty of drop-shots and should be able to control the tempo of the match.
