Preview: 2025 ATP Tour ATP 250 BOSS Open (Stuttgart Open) Tennis Club Weissenhof, Stuttgart, Germany (Outdoor Grass-court) Quarterfinals- Taylor Fritz vs Marton Fucsovics

This has been a tough campaign for 2024 US Open beaten finalist Taylor Fritz. The big-serving American has struggled with injuries this year, nursing an abdominal strain while rolling his ankle in Geneva.

BOSS Open (Stuttgart Open)
Tennis Club Weissenhof, Stuttgart, Germany (Outdoor Grass-court)
Selected Quarterfinals- 13th June

Taylor Fritz (2) 0.34 vs Marton Fucsovics 2.2

He showed a glimpse of his potential during the Miami Open, going down to Jakub Mensik in the semifinals. But he really struggled to come to terms with the clay, shocked by Daniel Altmaier in the first round of the French Open. He looked slightly more at ease in his Stuttgart opener, seeing off Quentin Halys 6-3, 7-6. He served with authority, firing 12 aces and winning 81% of his first-serve points. Fritz has proven to be an accomplished grass-court player in the past, winning three Eastbourne titles and reaching the Wimbledon quarters twice. This could be the week where Fritz’s season starts to click into gear.

Ironman Marton Fucsovics hasn’t left much of an impression at tour-level this season (his highlight being a semifinal run at the Bucharest Open). The Hungarian has enjoyed some success at Challenger level this year, winning the event in Manama. Fucsovics had to dip deep just to get through qualifying this week, seeing off Patrick Zahraj and Beibet Zukhayev in three-set matches. He began his campaign with a solid straight-sets win over Yannick Hanfmann. He was even more convincing in his round of 16 clash, seeing off Arthur Rinderknech 7-6, 6-3. Fucsovics was at his ruthless best against Rinderknech, hitting 31 winners to eleven unforced errors while winning 92% of his first-serve points. The Hungarian has some minor grass-court pedigree, reaching the Wimbledon quarters in 2021 whilst winning the Ilkley Challenger back in 2017.

The Verdict: Fritz to win in three sets at 2.45- Fritz leads the head-to-head 2-1. However, Fucsovics won their most recent meeting, beating the American in straight sets on these surfaces back in 2023. Fucsovics was sensational against Rinderknech and may stand an outside chance of upsetting a lukewarm Fritz. However, I just think that Fritz’s superior firepower and vastly improved net-play should give him the edge in three.
