Am Rothenbaum, Hamburg, Germany (Outdoor Clay)
Selected Round of 16 Matches- 21st May

Brandon Nakashima (7) 1.29 vs Luciano Darderi 0.6

The result improves Nakashima overall clay-court record to a middling 16-17. Having said that, Nakashima has shown some promise on the dirt this year, reaching the semifinals in Houston while performing admirably in Madrid (he pushed Medvedev to three sets in his round of 16 finish). Nakashima has shown glimpses of his best form this year, reaching the 4th round in three of his five Masters 1000 appearances. Nakashima is a very solid all-court player, using his supreme athleticism to bolster his rally-resistance. These quickish Hamburg clay-courts should suit him, giving his groundstrokes a bit more pop while still giving him the opportunity to show off his admirable defensive capabilities.

This has been a yo-yo campaign for Italian clay-court specialist Luciano Darderi. The aggressive baseliner started the year very poorly, going 2-7 in his first nine matches (including an uncharacteristically poor stretch on the South American clay). But he came to life during the European clay-court swing, finishing runner-up in the Napoli Challenger before claiming a 2nd career title at the Grand Prix Hassan II. He reached the quarterfinals in Munich before having to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to a physical issue. He hasn’t looked the same player since that physical setback, going 1-3 in his last three outings (which included two Challengers). He looked reinvigorated in his Hamburg opener, taking down Diego Dedura-Palomero 6-1, 6-4. He outclassed his opponent, hitting 24 winners to 20 unforced errors. He also served tremendously, winning 90% of his first-serve points. Darderi will be hoping that result can help him rediscover his pre-Madrid clay-court form.

The Verdict: Darderi to win in straight sets at 1.45- This will be their first career meeting. I think that this represents a real chance for Darderi to rediscover his best clay-court form. Nakashima has cooled in recent weeks and Darderi was in complete control in his Hamburg opener. Darderi has an explosive forehand that could surprise Nakashima.
