After two years on the sidelines due to injuries, the 30-year-old returned to competitive tennis earlier this season, but his return was cut short due to an injury. In March, at the Indian Wells, the tennis star retired from the first round against Van de Zandschulp, sending him to the next round after winning by 7-6 (7), 3-0.

During the post-match interview, Kyrios explained that he was feeling uncomfortable while playing, and he was experiencing very sharp pains in his wrist.

“I wasn’t too confident that I was going to be able to play today, to be honest,” Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.

“Two days ago, in practice, I had to stop my practice because I felt pain in my wrist. I felt like it was okay to take the court. Just got progressively worse… started feeling a sharp pain in my wrist.”

He was set to partner up with Jordan Thompson for the doubles at the French Open but was forced to step down after suffering from another knee injury, which also led to him missing Wimbledon for the third time.

Although Kyrios has made it to the official US Open entry list, this does not guarantee him a spot, considering his injury history.

Kyrios has also entered the new-look Mixed Doubles Championship at Flushing Meadows, starting from Monday, August 18, with Naomi Osaka.

Other Tennis players who have also activated their protected ranking to qualify for the tournament include Petra Kvitova (No 14) and Sorana Cirstea (No 37).
