In her first grass-court match since a round-three Wimbledon defeat last year, and her first match since her French Open semi-final defeat, world No. 8 Swiatek saw off qualifier Azarenka 6-4, 6-4.

It was Swiatek’s first match of the tournament, with the fourth seed having received a bye in the opening round.

And there was perhaps a little rust early on for the 23-year-old, who fell 1-4 down in the opening set, though she managed to rally and seal victory in just an hour and 36 minutes.

“The first few games, I thought I was playing really well, and I had opportunities to break her, but I didn’t,” said Swiatek.

“I kind of got maybe less intense, but I wanted to keep doing what I know I can do, and at the end, it was a great match.

“It was my first match on grass this year, actually having byes in these tournaments is not always a great thing because I want to play on grass as much as possible right now, but I’m really happy that I’m through to the next round.”

The victory was a significant one for five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek, with it being the 300th tour-level match win of her career.

Remarkably, it has taken the Pole just 372 matches to reach that milestone, making her the 11th-fastest player in WTA Tour history to achieve 300 victories.

She is also the woman with the fewest matches played to reach 300 wins since tennis icon Serena Williams, who took just 359 matches to attain that feat.

A strong start to the grass-court season will be a welcome boost for Swiatek, considering not only her past struggles on the surface but also her recent struggles with form on the whole.

The Pole has not won a title since claiming her fourth French Open crown back in June 2024, and has also failed to reach a tour-level final since then.

Swiatek is now at her lowest ranking since 2021 and will be the eighth seed at Wimbledon, her lowest Grand Slam seeding since the 2021 French Open.

The world No. 8 has never reached a grass-court final in her career, and will return to court on Thursday to continue her Bad Homburg Open campaign.

Swiatek will meet either eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova or Maria Sakkari in the quarter-final, with that second-round match set to take place on Wednesday.

Other winners in Bad Homburg on Tuesday include top seed Jessica Pegula, who breezed past Katerina Siniakova, and second seed Jasmine Paolini, who saw off Leylah Fernandez.
