The 30-year-old made his return to Brisbane International in January, where he faced Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard in the first round and lost by 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3). Then, he participated on home soil at the Australian Open, where he encountered another defeat against Jacob Fearnley by 6-4 ,6-4.

During his post-match interview after the match, Kyrgios hinted at an early retirement as he expressed that he has been struggling to play since undergoing wrist reconstruction surgery.

“Realistically, I can’t see myself probably playing singles again here, so it was special. I didn’t want to just throw in the towel and walk off or retire. I was hurting physically. I respect my opponent. The fans waited hours to come see me play.”

Despite everything, Kyrgios returned to court in March at the Indian Wells, but things took a turn for the worse as he had a sharp pain in his wrist, which forced him to retire against Botic van de Zandschulp.

On Tuesday, he announced he would not be participating in the Wimbledon Open this year due to a new injury. The Australian tennis star last played at Wimbledon in 2022 against Novak Djokovic in the final and lost.

“Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year,” Kyrgios wrote on Instagram.

“I know how much you’ve all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road, though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.

“Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!”
