The French Open Champion is back, and she is a force not to be reckoned with. Recording her first win since the French Open, overcoming 23 double faults to secure a win against Danielle Collins by 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2) at the National Bank Open.
Coco Guaff last competed at Wimbledon, where she was defeated in straight sets by Dayana Yastremska, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
During the match, the 21-year-old appeared to struggle with her serving grip, which impacted on her consistency on the court. Since then, she has gone back to the drawing board to address and correct these issues.
Despite her efforts, she still struggled with her serve, delivering several shots that sailed well long, while others were too soft, allowing her opponent to capitalise on those opportunities easily.
Improving her serve accuracy and power remains a key focus for Gauff as she works to elevate her game and compete at the highest level.
“It was a frustrating match for me,” Gauff said.
“I felt like I was practising well and then I don’t think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way, and I can come back stronger in the next round.”
Gauff’s next third-round match at the National Bank Open will be against Veronika Kudermetova. Gauff and Kudermetova have faced each other three times on the WTA Tour, with Gauff leading their head-to-head record 2–1.
