England v India | 2nd ODI | Thursday 16th July | Sophia Gardens, Cardiff | 2:00pm
Thursday’s encounter at Sophia Gardens is the second match of a three-game series. India leads the series 1-0 following a six-wicket victory in the opener. If India wins in Cardiff they will take an unassailable lead in the series.
India is the world’s top ranked ODI side. England are ranked eighth.
India boasts three of the world’s top four ODI batsmen with Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma topping the charts with only Kiwi Daryl Mitchell ahead of them.
Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli boast the third and fourth best career averages in ODI cricket. Gill, who was undefeated in the series opener with 80, averages 60.57 while Kohli averages 58.50.
Virat Kohli doesn’t do things by half – if he gets started, he tends to go big. A quick look at his last 10 innings shows three scores of ten or less (two were ducks). But once he reaches double-figures he is hard to stop as he also has three centuries, 95 and two undefeated knocks above 50.
India has beaten England in each of their last six ODI matches
Prior to India’s win in the opening game of the ODI series, the tourists had yet to taste victory on their tour to England and Ireland. The previous seven games were all T20Is however and India are a completely different proposition in the 50 over format.

Weather:
Cardiff will experience hot conditions on Thursday afternoon, with temperatures peaking around 29 degrees under sunny skies. A gentle breeze from the northeast will provide minor relief. Form (most recent game first):
England: L, W, W, L, L.
India: W, W, W, W, L.
Last five games head-to-head: Ind, Ind, Ind, Ind, Ind.
Key player:
England, Jos Buttler: Fresh off celebrating his milestone 200th ODI appearance, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman remains a lethal middle-order weapon despite an uncharacteristic single-figure score in the series opener. Boasting a stellar career average of 39.11 paired with an elite 115.20 strike rate, Buttler’s supreme finishing skills make him dangerous. Historically comfortable at Sophia Gardens, where he averages 63.28 per innings, his ability to bat long and remain undefeated will be key to England’s hopes of levelling the series.
India, Shubman Gill: India’s ODI captain enters the second clash in scintillating touch after anchoring the first match with a sublime, match-winning 80 off 75 balls. Boasting an extraordinary career ODI average comfortably over 58, Gill’s technical mastery is perfectly suited to handling the testing, swinging conditions expected at Cardiff. His incredible form against England’s seam attack cements his role as the absolute cornerstone of the top order.
Verdict: India
England may have dominated the T20I series, but this is a different proposition. India has depth, experience and confidence – they are the number one side in the world, and they are operating at full-strength. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may be getting on in years, but they remain hungry to play in the 2027 World Cup and their presence in the team brings a steel and backbone that was lacking in the T20I squad. Expect India to win again against an England side who have lots of work to do.
