Former Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez believes new Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho will demand total commitment from his players.
Nacho, who made his Real Madrid debut during Mourinho’s first spell in charge in 2011, said the veteran coach’s intensity and winning mentality could help drive the club forward once again.
Speaking to AS, Nacho admitted there are no guarantees in football, but he believes Mourinho will ensure every player gives everything for the team.
“I don’t know if they will win titles because football is never easy,” Nacho said. “But he will have the players fully committed and giving 100 percent. The intensity he brings to every training session and every match is incredible. I experienced it myself.”
He added: “If the players and Mourinho are completely united, I have no doubt that good things are coming for Real Madrid. Mourinho is a Real Madrid fan and he understands exactly what it means to win and lose at this club. If the players are with him all the way, there are exciting times ahead.”
Nacho also praised Real Madrid’s signing of Marc Cucurella, describing the Spain international as an ideal addition to the squad.
He said Cucurella’s work rate and determination make him a perfect fit for the club.
“It is a fantastic signing,” Nacho said. “He always plays with intensity and is ready to fight for his team. He has all the qualities needed to play for Real Madrid.”
Nacho believes Cucurella has arrived at the right time, with the team needing players capable of maintaining a high level of energy and commitment.
“I know Cucurella and I wish him all the best,” he said. “I am sure he will continue achieving his dreams and goals at Real Madrid.”
Real Madrid continue their pre-season preparations on Tuesday with a behind-closed-doors friendly against CD Leganes at Ciudad Real Madrid in Valdebebas.
