Morgan Rogers has completed a British record 117-million-pound move from Aston Villa to Chelsea, ending months of speculation after signing a six-year deal.
The England midfielder returned from the United States on Monday following the World Cup, underwent a medical in London and officially sealed the transfer.
The agreement had been finalised on Saturday afternoon, shortly before Rogers featured in England’s bronze-medal victory over France.
“I’m joining the biggest club in London,” Rogers said in his announcement video.
“The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of. I think it was just perfect for me. I just can’t wait to get going.”
Chelsea had monitored Rogers for more than two years and identified him as their leading attacking transfer target. The club deliberately delayed making its approach until after England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, allowing the 23-year-old to concentrate fully on international duty.
Chelsea’s sporting directors were central to completing the deal, with head coach Xabi Alonso also involved in negotiations. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali helped drive the transfer, while his strong relationship with Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris proved beneficial during discussions.
England team-mate Reece James also urged Rogers to join Chelsea, while close friend Cole Palmer was aware of the negotiations throughout the process.
Villa had regarded Rogers as their most valuable asset and had long maintained that only a British record transfer fee would persuade them to sell.
Arsenal had been considered the frontrunners to sign the midfielder before Chelsea accelerated their pursuit. After reaching an agreement with Chelsea, Villa gave Arsenal the opportunity to match the offer, but the Gunners stood by their lower valuation and accepted Rogers would move to Stamford Bridge instead.
