Announced on Tuesday, the new policy will apply during the opening week of the 2027 main draw, when the allocation of 34 USD ground passes will be limited.
Officials expect demand to reach unprecedented levels next year following record-breaking attendances.
Ground passes, which are particularly favoured by casual spectators, allow fans to watch matches across Melbourne Park’s outside courts rather than being restricted to the main showcourts.
However, growing crowds in recent years have resulted in lengthy queues to enter those venues, prompting concerns that the overall spectator experience has deteriorated.
“This decision reflects the growing popularity of the AO and will help ensure fans are able to make the most of everything on offer across the precinct,” the governing body said in a statement.
The move comes after overcrowding and extended wait times during January’s event drew criticism and diminished the experience for many attendees.
The 2026 Australian Open attracted a record 1,368,043 spectators over its three-week schedule. Carlos Alcaraz lifted the men’s singles trophy, while Elena Rybakina claimed the women’s title, with both champions crowned during the tournament’s closing weekend.
