LEICESTER
Race 1 No13 MAPLEDURHAM (Nap)
Trainer: Rod Millman – Jockey: Jack Gilligan
MAPLEDURHAM belied her SP of 100-1 to finish third of 20 in a Newbury maiden. Her trainer has excelled in his handling of fillies of this ilk over the years, and his daughter of Kodiac can show by getting off the mark that her first offering was no fluke.
Race 3 No10 KING’S SCHOLAR
Trainer: Ed Walker – Jockey: Tom Marquand
KING’S SCHOLAR didn’t fire when easy to back on his Polytrack introduction but showed how much that run had benefited him by getting closest to the winner Fast Society at Salisbury. He will experience different underfoot conditions today, but is bred to enjoy a step up in trip, and can go one better.
Race 6 No9 LIBERTY BAY (Each Way)
Trainer: Mark Usher – Jockey: George Bass
LIBERTY BAY bids to end a losing run stretching back three years but there are grounds that she can achieve it. She’s troubled the judge on two of her three starts this year and is well treated on her best form, while the visor that appeared to assist her last time is retained.
SOUTHWELL
Race 1 No4 CHASE A FORTUNE (Nap)
Trainer: Chris Grant – Jockey: Danny McMenamin
CHASE A FORTUNE has made a solid start to life as a chaser with an initial success at Catterick followed by good efforts in stronger races. He has the Make and shape to do well in this new sphere, and can make it a winning first visit to this track.
Race 6 No5 FOSTER’S FORTUNE
Trainer: Chris Grant – Jockey: Danny McMenamin
FOSTER’S FORTUNE can contribute to a good day for Grant with a success in this two-mile handicap hurdle. The five-year-old benefitted from having McMenamin in the irons for the first time with an authoritative display on his handicap debut and can get the better of another recent winner in Chicago Gal.
LINGFIELD PARK
Race 2 No5 NEW CENTURY
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Rookie sire Kameko has made a solid start which can be further boosted by newcomer NEW CENTURY. It was up this very strip that Murphy guided Del Ray to victory last week and if there’s money for the selection I wouldn’t bet against him repeating the good example of that colt, who is also a Kameko.
Race 5 No2 PHOENIX MOON (Each Way)
Trainer: Denis Coakley – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
PHOENIX MOON isn’t an obvious choice for this bottom-grade handicap, but the Phoenix Of Spain filly has always looked the type to do better when being sent down the handicap route. With Murphy on board, she can earn for the first time on this, only the fourth outing of her career.
WOLVERHAMPTON
Race 3 No2 WAKE UP HARRY
Trainer: Brian Toomey – Jockey: Neil Callan
WAKE UP HARRY has scored twice and been twice placed from just five outings since his move to Toomey. He responds positively to different types of headgear, and in a pair of cheekpieces can add to his laurels in the popular Redknapp colours.
Race 4 No2 STREAK LIGHTNING
Trainer: Ruth Carr – Jockey: James Sullivan
When beaten into third in a blanket finish at this course, STREAK LIGHTNING indicated he’s on the cusp of a return to winning ways. He’s trying to end a 13-long losing sequence stretching back to almost a year, but all the signs are that he can achieve it.
Race 7 No4 Q TWENTY BOY (Nap)
Trainer: Mark Usher – Jockey: Alicia Perkins
Q TWENTY BOY looks a bet worth waiting for in the colours of his trainer. He has a very good record at Dunstall Park where his recent figures include two successes this year. Furthermore, his inexperienced rider to her credit posted a 25-1 triumph on him last month.
