LINGFIELD PARK
Race 1 No3 CANDYMAN STAN (Nap)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Colours On Canvass is an interesting player in this restricted maiden switching codes after two successes over jumps. However, the well-connected CANDYMAN STAN has a point to prove after leaving the cash behind at Kempton and is worth persevering with, especially with the champion jockey elect now in his saddle.
Race 4 No7 PURPLE POPPY
Trainer: Jimmy Fox – Jockey: Sam Hitchcott
PURPLE POPPY didn’t enjoy the best of trips when out of the money here last week and could be worth another chance from a favourable draw from which the mare can slot into a handy early position. If enjoying the rub of the green at the business end she can make amends.
Race 7 No8 MAGICAL DRAGON (Each Way)
Trainer: Patrick Chamings – Jockey: David Probert
MAGICAL DRAGON was a winner here a year ago since when his racecourse appearances have been sporadic. He seemed to be returning to form when claiming a minor cheque on his latest outing at Chelmsford last month, and with Probert back in the saddle needs respecting, though this is a wide-open heat.
Race 8 No9 RING OF LIGHT (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: Trevor Whelan
RING OF LIGHT comes with a repetitive earning profile and though breaking from a tricky draw could find this is his day. The grey has troubled the judge on both starts following a breathing operation and is back on a surface on which he top and tailed a fine hat-trick two years ago.
LEICESTER
Race 1 No10 DOUBLE RED (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: Morgan Cole
In the same colours, DOUBLE RED can prove that patience is a virtue and post a first career success. The grey has been forced since chasing home runaway scorer Typical Woman to miss a couple of engagements but that was a career-best run and if improved upon should see him claiming a decent cheque from the foot of the weights.
Race 3 No1 FORMAL (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore
FORMAL was a hugely impressive scorer and did us a favour at the same time on debut at Newbury. She produced a smart turn of foot to foil an odds-on rival and could be the type of individual that helps steer her trainer towards an extension of his glittering career. She’s carrying a penalty, but with Moore in the hot seat is unquestionably the best bet of the day.
Race 4 No11 STARZINTHEIREYES
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rossa Ryan
Archivist could be another for Freemason Lodge but this looks a warm contest and STARZINTHEIREYES is just preferred. The son of Starspangledbanner blew the start and yet finished with gusto on his Newmarket introduction. He’s well-regarded at Kimpton Stables, and can go one better.
Race 6 No5 SOUND REASON (Each Way)
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Jason Watson
There’s no question that SOUND REASON is well handicapped and capable of opening his seasonal account any time now. Two very good efforts at Beverley prove that, and if getting an early handle on this sprint he can prove hard to catch.
CATTERICK BRIDGE
Race 2 No2 GOOD POINT (Each Way)
Trainer: Bryan Smart – Jockey: Andrew Breslin
GOOD POINT has proved easy to back on both outings since his win at Wolverhampton last November. He’s not enjoyed a straightforward run but was eye-taking when claiming a minor cheque in a big field at Beverley last month and could easily have more to offer as he should be fitter.
Race 7 No6 MR STRUTTER (Each Way)
Trainer: David Thompson – Jockey: Andrew Elliott
MR STRUTTER appeals as a win and place bet at a price granted his good overall record at this track. He’s troubled the judge on a handful of occasions since his latest triumph on Halloween, and is going to enjoy the cut in the ground against mainly out-of-form opponents.
NEWCASTLE
Race 2 No5 PHILANTHROPIST (Nap)
Trainer: James Fanshawe – Jockey: Daniel Muscutt
PHILANTHROPIST progressed to go down in a close finish at Yarmouth when he showed no problem for some cut in the ground. Switched to Tapeta for his first all-weather outing, he should take plenty of beating.
Race 5 No8 CLASSIC ENCOUNTER
Trainer: George Boughey – Jockey: Tommie Jakes
Godolphin cast off CLASSIC ENCOUNTER returns from a nine-month absence but will be hard to beat if retaining the ability he showed in three outings last year. The Shamardal gelding will not wear the cheek pieces he sported on his latest outing at Kempton before Christmas but the vibes for him are encouraging.
