QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL BEST BETS DAY TWO WEDNESDAY
Race 1 Coral Pipped At The Post Winners Handicap
No3 KURAKKA
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Rossa Ryan
The Day 2 opener is a tightly knit three-year-old only handicap in with KURAKKA may be the answer. The American-bred colt has fared well in each of his three races this year including when third to King’s Charter in the equivalent race at the Newmarket July meeting. The horses that beat him do not renew rivalry and the selection looks a solid proposition to be in the money, with SUDU and OMNI MAN the ones most likely to cause him problems.
Race 2 HKJC WORLDPOOL OAK TREE STAKES (Group 3)
No14 TABITI
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Beckett is double-handed in the first Pattern race on the card, with TABITI preferred to SAQQARA SANDS. The selection brings a strong profile to the table, as from three outings she only encountered defeat in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile last year, while she put in a very solid effort to trouble the judge on seasonal reappearance n the Sandringham at Royal Ascot. The blinkers added for the first time that day are retained, and with Moore doing the steering from a favourable draw the daughter of Kingman should prove hard to beat. French trained JASNA’S SECRET and JABAARA form strong opposition and should be ready to take advantage should things go wrong for the selection.
Race 3 HKJC WORLD POOL MOLECOMB STAKES (Group 3)
No3 LADY INMAN
Trainer: Ger Lyons – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Ireland’s only runner in this sizzling sprint LADY INMAN can take care of business. The Starman filly justified heavy support on each of her first three runs before a first defeat against Beautify in a Group 2 at the Curragh. She gave the well regarded winner plenty to think about and only conceded defeat in the final 150 yards. That suggests a return to the minimum trip will prove to be just her ticket, and assist in a defeat of a temptingly priced roughie in ARGENTINE TANGO.
Race 4 VISIT QATAR SUSSEX STAKES (Group 1)
No5 FIELD OF GOLD (Nap)
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: William Buick
Goodwood’s flagship race can fall to the hugely impressive FIELD OF GOLD, for whom the race should be a procession. The Kingman colt only lost out in the 2,000 Guineas because of an injudicious ride, making up for it with exhilarating successes in the Irish equivalent and the St James’s Palace Stakes. His turn of foot is a joy to behold, and should see him make short work of his six opponents. Queen Anne Stakes runner-up ROSALLION can follow the favourite home and stave off the challenge of Coolmore’s HENRI MATISSE, for whom Aidan O’Brien fields pacemaker SERENGETI. The other runners QIRAT, DOCKLANDS and CARL SPACKLER are hopelessly outclassed.
Prediction: 1st FIELD OF GOLD, 2nd Rosallion, 3rd Henri Matisse
Race 5 British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap
No3 ASHARIBA (Each Way)
Trainer: David Mensuisier – Jockey: Tom Marquand
It’s been a tough and frustrating season for the local Menuisier stable but ASHARIBA is a talented filly who can with a win here assist in changing its luck. The daughter of Ribchester needed her first run back and left the cash that came for her behind when just out of the money in a Class2 at Newcastle, where she faded. A return to turf over the same trip should bring about a revival, though her draw on the outside of the field is a concern. Veteran WISPER can never be discounted and can get into the argument, while the least exposed in the field, MODEL YUKO, has scope to do well in this first handicap assignment over a longer trip. QUEBELLA couldn’t cut the mustard in Listed company at this course last month but fared better in a Class3 at Southwell. She can run into the money without winning, while of the roughies PATAGONIA GIRL is also one to bear in mind.
Race 6 British Stallion Studs EBF Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes
No8 REVIVAL POWER (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Allan
This is quite an open race in which I’ll give another chance to REVIVAL POWER. One of four challengers from Yorkshire, the Bungle Inthejungle filly looked the part on her Thirsk introduction but was then thrown into the deep end in the Queen Mary in which ZELAINA finished five lengths in front of her. The latter is carded to go off very short, but in different circumstances here, the placings can be turned round. OUR CODY is another contender following her cosy Windsor success. She has the champion jockey in her irons, further boosting her chance.
Race 7 World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap
No7 BLUE PRINCE (Each Way)
Trainer: David Evans – Jockey: Sean Levey
BLUE PRINCE delivered a sweeping run to take out the 2024 running of this race and from 4lb higher in the weights he needs respecting. Evans will have had a repeat bid at the prize uppermost in his mind, and the selection has been freshened up with a 103 day break since his last run. MR CHAPLIN fell into the Goodwood trap of getting boxed in and should have finished closer on his first run of the season, and though out with the washing at Royal Ascot was compromised by a poor draw. With so few miles on the clock this year he needs respecting. LEADMAN has benefitted from a change of stable and has a plum draw. He came good last time, and should again finish in the shake-up.
Prediction: 1st BLUE PRINCE, 2nd Mr Chaplin, 3rd Leadman
Race 4 TOTE GALWAY PLATE (HANDICAP CHASE)
No8 DOWN MEMORY LANE (Nap)
Trainer: Gordon Elliott – Jockey: Mark Walsh
DOWN MEMORY LANE enjoyed a productive campaign in novice chases last season and his early re-entry to the fray sees him reconvene on what should prove more favourable better ground. The seven-year-old represents a stable that seeks its fifth success in this historic contest in the last 11 runnings, whilst looking to many judges to have crept under the handicapper’s radar. NURBURGRING is a versatile performer who took out the Galway Hurdle 12 months ago and has more recently troubled the judge at the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot, where he chased home Ascending in the Ascot Stakes. He’s not looked the most natural of jumpers over fences, but will be a danger to all should that part of his profile stand the test. THECOMPANYSERGEANT warmed up for this with a solid enough effort over hurdles at Naas, while grittily succumbing to Jagwar in the Plate at Cheltenham. He has to be of serious interest for a Gavin Cromwell stable that is enjoying a bumper year in all aspects of the sport. ANYWAY benefitted from having his tongue tied down when landing a beginners chase at Kilbeggan whilst finishing second to Caldwell Potter in the Jack Richards at the Festival. He could have plenty more to offer, whilst although unpredictable, OLYMPIC MAN is left out at your peril, and could be another to light up the board.
Prediction: 1st DOWN MEMORY LANE, 2nd Nurburgring, 3rd Thecompanysergeant, 4th Anyway, 5th Olympic Man
