Hollywoodbets was first established in 1986 as Winning Form, a publisher of horse racing form guides which later expanded into distribution. Over the years, the brand has established itself as a stalwart in the horse racing scene in South Africa. Not only is the powerhouse brand the headline sponsor of popular racecourses in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, Hollywoodbets further sponsors trainers, training schools and the Hollywood Syndicate, which boasts over 100 horses. The company is also the title sponsor of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Africa’s Greatest Horse Racing Event!

The Hollywood Syndicate horses compete in action-packed race meetings throughout South Africa and have set a high standard on the international front. To create a sense of inclusivity, Hollywoodbets thoroughly enjoys naming horses after sponsorships and partnerships, and English Premier League Club, Brentford FC, is no exception!

The first Brentford-inspired Hollywood Syndicate horse is Hugsandhighfives, named after a partnership that is indeed filled with hugs and high fives! The 4-year-old filly had a fantastic maiden run at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 13 March 2023 and galloped to glory!

“Wissa’s on fire!” was a popular phrase and song used to describe fan favourite Yoane Wissa as he terrorised defenders last season. The line is sung by fans to the tune of “Freed from Desire” that is often echoed at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Hollywood Syndicate named a Cape Town racing colt Wissa’s on Fire in his honour. Winning his first race with the Syndicate, he takes after his namesake with speed and spirit!

Eagle-eyed fans would easily be able to pick the Bay gelding Thisiswhatitmeans as a Brentford-named horse. In Brentford FC’s first season back in the English Premier League after 74 years, then Captain and beloved player Pontus Jansson scored in injury time to give the Bees an away victory against Watford. Gesturing to the Bees emblem on the white away kit, Jansson exclaimed, “This is what it means!” to the roaring crowd. A moment, a comment: a legend was born and a horse was named.

For over a century, the Griffin Park Stadium was the home of the Bees. The beloved stadium experienced it all: muddy, cold mornings; two World Wars; multiple relegation battles and 4th division to Championship games. With four pubs located at each corner of the stadium, fans hold Griffin Park in high regard. In 2020, Brentford FC moved to the Gtech Community Stadium, a stage that mirrors the club’s current English Premier League status. However, Griffin Park will continue to live in the hearts of fans and its legacy now continues in the eponymous Bay gelding in South Africa.

Rivals QPR hurled an insult at Brentford FC, calling the club “just a bus stop in Hounslow”. The Bees, however, turned this phrase around for their own glory and adopted it as a nickname that emphasises the club’s pride and accomplishments. With fierce determination and a willingness to succeed, a 3-year-old Chestnut gelding now proudly lives up to the name of Busstopinhounslow.
