Neil Morrice outlines his best bets and tips for Wednesday’s British meetings Beverly, Hamilton Park, Newton Abbot, Warwick and Ripon on 25/05/2022.
BEVERLEY – 25/05/2022
Race 4 No7 PROUD ARCHI
Trainer: Michael Dods – Jockey: Connor Beasley
PROUD ARCHI gave off a strong signal,he was on the way back when not beaten far on his reintroduction at Wetherby. If making a step forward he should give these foes plenty to think about.
Race 6 No5 URBAN VIOLET (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: David Egan
Cut in the ground is an asset to URBAN VIOLET, who struggled after her eight and a half lengths Sandown success in the soft at this time last year. However, the assessor has now cut her some slack, and she can be competitive.
HAMILTON PARK – 25/05/2022
Race 5 No7 CARTER COWBOY
Trainer: Richard Fahey – Jockey: Paul Hanagan
CARTER COWBOY faded tamely after attracting plenty of support in the Musselburgh race won by Ayr Empress, and he was also unable to justify late backing on his previous outing at Beverley. Connections will be keen to recoup those losses, and he’s worth another chance.
Race 6 No8 SAULIRE STAR
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Phil Dennis
There’s little to separate Shine On Brendan and SAULIRE STAR on recent Ayr running, but the latter is better off at the weights and can gain a first success for her trainer, having shown improved form in recent starts of of Great Habton. Shine On Brendan had the call that day, but now operates off a 5lb higher mark.
NEWTON ABBOT – 25/05/2022
Race 3 No1 BALLYGOE
Trainer: Chris Down – Jockey: James Davies
BALLYGOE has run respectably in handicaps prior to this reversion to a maiden hurdle. While he doesn’t get things done in a hurry, he’s in with a good chance as he takes a class drop.
Race 6 No1 ADRIEN DU PONT (Nap)
Trainer: Paul Nicholls – Jockey: Mr Freddie Gingell
ADRIEN DU PONT tends to come alive at this time of year, as demonstrated by his back-to-back successes at Newbury and Kempton in 2021. He also ran well when last seen chasing home Law Of Gold at Ascot at the end of March, and is fresh and fancied to take the spoils under a capable amateur rider who claims 7lb.
Race 7 No8 CHANTILLY HAZE (Each Way)
Trainer: Phil Dando – Jockey: Conor Ring
Black Sam Bellamy mare CHANTILLY HAZE regularly attracts market support, but has so far failed to justify it. She’s on occasions not been able to finish off her races, as was the case at Ludlow last month, but over this slightly shorter trip she can raise her game.
WARWICK – 25/05/2022
Race 4 No1 SAIL AWAY (Nap)
Trainer: Dan Skelton – Jockey: Harry Skelton
SAIL AWAY stayed on to take home a minor cheque after travelling well off a hold up ride in a better race than this at Aintree. The former French-trained six-year-old gave the impression that he should have finished closer, and even though the task of conceding 13lb to Ultimate Getaway is a tall one on paper, I think he can achieve it.
RIPON – 25/05/2022
Race 1 No1 BETWEENTHESTICKS (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
BETWEENTHESTICKS did everything he could to thwart market rival Panama at Windsor before having to play second fiddle in the final 100 yards. He’s the one with the points on the board in this maiden, and should have little trouble in landing the ‘best bet’ vote.
Race 6 No1 BANNED
Trainer: Hughie Morrison – Jockey: Hollie Doyle
BANNED has a number of in form foes to worry about but could easily improve past them on the basis of her good effort behind Sea Silk Road at Nottingham. The Ulysses filly will obviously go into handicaps shortly, but can take out this maiden on the way.
Race 7 No6 GULLANE ONE
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Allan
Easterby’s fine record at this garden course can be further enhanced by a success for GULLANE ONE. The chestnut has earned in successive visits to Ripon this month and should now be fully primed to put his best foot forward.
