World No 1 Scheffler began the final round four shots adrift but carded a three-under 67 at Caves Valley to finish on 15-under 265, clinching his fifth PGA Tour title of the season.
Already this year’s Open and PGA Championship winner, Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006-07 to win five or more times in consecutive campaigns.
The two-time Masters champion also cemented his status as favorite for the FedEx Cup title heading into next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta, where he will aim to become the first to win back-to-back playoff crowns.
Scheffler’s decisive blow came after he overshot the green at the par-three 17th, only to see his long recovery chip shot track the length of the putting surface and drop for birdie. The stunning strike restored his two-shot cushion after MacIntyre had closed the gap with a birdie at the 16th.
“Any time you hole a chip like that it’s pretty nice,” Scheffler said. “It looked good when it landed, it looked good when it was rolling and it was nice to see that one go in.”
Scotland’s MacIntyre, chasing a wire-to-wire victory, faltered early with three bogeys in his opening five holes. He fought back with a birdie at the 16th but could not match Scheffler’s brilliance down the stretch.
“I got off to an absolutely horrific start,” MacIntyre said. “It’s come out dead and then it’s got a massive mud ball just short of the green. I just felt great going out. I wasn’t even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days.”
For Scheffler, it was a 17th straight sub-par round on the PGA Tour, underlining the consistency that has carried him to the top of the game.
“I think it has a lot to do with the intensity I bring to each round,” Scheffler said. “I try not to take days off. I try not to take shots off. When it gets to this time of year it can be a little bit tiring. Today was a grind.”
The BMW Championship was the second FedEx Cup playoff event, with the top 30 in the standings advancing to East Lake. England’s Harry Hall was the only new name to qualify, edging out former US Open winner Lucas Glover.
