McIlroy edged out Justin Rose in a play-off to complete the career grand slam, adding the green jacket to his US Open, PGA Championship, and Open Championship titles.
The 35-year-old cut short his celebrations to honour his commitment with partner Shane Lowry in last week’s Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans, but will opt for a brief break instead of teeing it up at the Byron Nelson, which starts on Thursday.
“I’ve got to just take a little bit of time here,” McIlroy said after finishing in a tie for twelfth at the Zurich Classic. “It’s nice to have a week off, and reset and try to get some practice in.
“I feel like it’s like two practice weeks coming up in a way, with next week at home and then Truist, as well, in some ways. Yeah, I’m looking forward to a couple of days off and then sort of kicking the feet up and trying to recharge the batteries a little bit.”
McIlroy and Lowry briefly threatened to make a run on the final day of the Zurich Classic but ultimately came up short.
“It’s been a fun week. I think when we went back out after the delay, we felt like we still had a good chance, and we didn’t make birdie on 11, and then we bogeyed 13 again for the second time this week,” McIlroy added.
“Yeah, just didn’t really have any momentum from when we started back up again, and it was difficult to just sort of get anything. Overall, it’s been a good week. It’s always good to team up with this man. We’ve had fun.”
With the PGA Championship just around the corner, McIlroy won’t be resting for very long. He will return at next week’s Truist Championship as a final tune-up ahead of the next major of the year at Quail Hollow, which tees off on May 15.
The Northern Irishman has a strong record at the venue, having won the Wells Fargo Championship three times, including his first PGA Tour victory back in 2010.
