England were left to rue missed opportunities as Spain overturned a half-time deficit to claim a 3-2 victory at Wembley Stadium in their Nations League opener.
The world champions needed just two minutes to break the deadlock, with Lamine Yamal pouncing on a mistake by Marc Guehi before keeping his composure to beat James Trafford.
England recovered from the early setback and took control before the break. Anthony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute before Harry Kane put the hosts ahead four minutes later.
Kane had the chance to extend England’s lead shortly after the restart, but the striker’s penalty struck the woodwork.
Spain took advantage of the let-off as Alex Baena produced a superb curling finish to bring the visitors level.
The comeback was completed with 15 minutes remaining when Mikel Oyarzabal found the back of the net to give Spain all three points.
Elsewhere, Croatia secured a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Prague in Group A, with veteran Luka Modric captaining the visitors.
Modric put Croatia ahead two minutes after half-time, but Adam Karabec levelled for the Czech Republic in the 54th minute. Marco Pasalic restored Croatia’s lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Switzerland also enjoyed a winning start to their first League B campaign, beating North Macedonia 3-0 away from home.
Remo Freuler opened the scoring, while Zeki Amdouni scored before half-time before completing his brace after the break.
