In his last press conference after their 1-1 draw against Leeds United, the 40-year-old was a ticking time bomb, saying everyone should stick to their job title, and he will do his as the manager of Manchester United.

“I was really clear on that. My contract is going to finish in 18 months, and after that, everyone is going to move on. That is the deal, and that is my job to be a coach.

“ If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club.

“ I came here to be the manager of Manchester United and not to be the coach, and every department, the scouting department, the sports director, needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months, and then we move on.”

Amorim joined the Red Devils in November 2024. As manager, he led the team to 25 wins in 63 games. Last season was the worst league season for United as they finished in 15th place, which is their lowest top-flight finish since 1974 when they were relegated.

As United hunts for a new manager, ex-Manchester United midfielder and current U18s coach Darren Fletcher will step in as the interim coach.

The club released a statement confirming Amorim’s sacking and the way forward for the team. It reads,” the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

According to Sky Sports, Amorim’s ’emotional and inconsistent behaviour’ was a key factor in the decision, and a refusal to adapt and evolve his preferred 3-4-3 system led to a breakdown in confidence in the head coach.

Amorim had a meeting with the director of football, Jason Wilcox, on Friday, where the team’s tactical approach was discussed, and it is rumored that Wilcox did not like Amorim’s response. Which he considered negative, emotional, and led to the decision to part ways.
