The Reds are reportedly poised to activate Frimpong’s release clause, signaling their intent to bolster their squad for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

Frimpong, a 24-year-old Netherlands international, has dazzled as a right-wing-back under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, contributing five goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances this season.

His attacking flair and relentless energy have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after talents, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea all having shown interest in recent years. “Frimpong is about as attacking as it gets among right-backs in the game today,” noted David Ornstein of The Athletic, highlighting his unique skill set.

With Alexander-Arnold confirming his exit to join Real Madrid on a free transfer when his contract expires in June, Liverpool have acted swiftly. The Reds have targeted Frimpong’s release clause, valued at approximately 35 million euros, a figure well below his market worth of 50 million euros, according to Transfermarkt. “Liverpool are ready to trigger the release clause and make the 24-year-old the first signing of the summer,” reported Paul Joyce of The Times.

Frimpong’s versatility appeals to Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot, who values the Dutchman’s ability to play as a right-back, wing-back, or even in advanced roles. “He ticks a lot of boxes for Arne Slot,” said Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, noting that Liverpool see him as capable of contributing in the front three if needed. His status as a homegrown player, due to nine years in Manchester City’s academy, further enhances his appeal under UEFA regulations.

Celtic, Frimpong’s former club, stand to benefit significantly from any transfer. Having sold him to Leverkusen for 11.5 million euros in 2021, the Scottish champions are entitled to around 30% of the profit, potentially pocketing 5.4 million euros. “Celtic have a sell-on clause worth about 5 million euros,” confirmed Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol.

Frimpong’s attacking output contrasts with Alexander-Arnold’s playmaking brilliance. “Trent Alexander-Arnold has made 16 through balls in the past two seasons, Frimpong just two,” explained Sky Sports, illustrating their differing styles. “Frimpong’s 168 take-ons dwarf Alexander-Arnold’s 82, showing his preference for driving forward.”

Liverpool may need to adapt their system to accommodate Frimpong’s forward runs, potentially requiring tactical tweaks to ensure defensive balance, especially with Mohamed Salah occupying the right flank.

Frimpong himself has expressed admiration for Liverpool, having said in the past, “Liverpool is a great club with history.”

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid, has added intrigue. “Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jeremie Frimpong are among the top players in their positions in world football, but they’re very different players,” said Sky Sports’ Solhekol, underscoring the shift Liverpool face.

Madrid are pushing to register63 registrations are pushing to have Alexander-Arnold available for the Club World Cup in June, though Liverpool have not yet received an offer for an early transfer.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Frimpong marks the beginning of a busy transfer window as they aim to defend their Premier League title. With Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah as current right-back options, Frimpong’s arrival could provide the attacking impetus needed to maintain their edge.

As Liverpool prepare for a new era without Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong’s potential signing represents a bold statement of intent. Fans will hope the Dutchman’s pace and goal-scoring instinct can light up Anfield and help the Reds continue their dominance in English football.
