Praise from Daniel Sturridge, caution from Roy Keane: Carrick’s Manchester United reign starts with a statement win

“I said it before the game, and I’ll say it again now: why not give him a chance?” said former England player Daniel Sturridge.

Daniel Sturridge was speaking after Michael Carrick made a strong start to his time as manager. Carrick began his debut with an impressive 2–0 win for Manchester United against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The result surprised many people. Some feel it is still too early to judge Carrick’s future as a manager based on just one match, and time will tell if he can keep getting good results.

Former football coach and player Roy Keane appears to be singing a different tune than Sturridge. He still needs a few months to see how the Red Devils perform before he gives his honest opinion, and he feels like right now PR and the media are pushing for Carrick.

“We’ll give credit where it’s due. Absolutely fantastic. But let’s judge it over the next few months.

“Again, the key for him, I think, now is try and get momentum into this team. This Belief again, no order of distractions, focus on the league matches. There are quality players, as we know, that they’ve not had that”.

Last week Tuesday, January 13, the 44-year-old was appointed Manchester United coach until the end of the season. Carrick previously worked at Old Trafford as an assistant coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In 2021, after Solskjaer was sacked, he was the interim manager, where he delivered exceptional results, winning two games and drawing one from three matches.

Keane also added that Carrick got lucky as Manchester City has been struggling with their form.

“Look at a lot of managers’ careers and timing, and Carrick coming here to United. I think it’s the dream scenario to come in everyone’s availability.

“You got Manchester City at home, who have been off a little bit. I’m happy to give credit where it’s due “

Manchester United will travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to face league leaders Arsenal.

It will be a very tough match for the Red Devils, who are hoping to win so they can move up to fourth place in the table. Arsenal, on the other hand, will be aiming to stay at the top of the league and continue their strong form.
