Thomas Muller bid an emotional farewell to the Champions League as Bayern Munich bowed out in a dramatic 4-3 aggregate defeat to Inter Milan.
The Bundesliga titans fought valiantly in a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the first-leg deficit.
The 35-year-old, set to depart Bayern at season’s end, reflected on his final European night with the club in an interview with DAZN. “It’s not hitting me emotionally yet,” Muller said.
“My family probably felt it more. I’m still enjoying it, no one hands you a win. We gave everything, and I can look in the mirror with no regrets.”
Muller praised Bayern’s effort, noting their strong start. “We controlled the first 15 minutes and should’ve scored,” he said. “Inter are quality, though. We had a dip for ten minutes, but the lads fought back.
“It was a proper battle, football at its core.”
Bayern’s focus now shifts to the Bundesliga, where they lead Bayer Leverkusen by six points.
A recent post on X from Bayern’s official account confirmed Muller’s sentiments, stating: “Thomas gave his all, as always. Now we regroup and push on in the league.”
The team face Heidenheim next, with manager Vincent Kompany urging consistency. “We’ve shown character,” Kompany said in a press conference. “The Bundesliga is our priority now.”
Muller, a Bayern legend with 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns, leaves a lasting legacy. “He’s irreplaceable,” Kompany added, per an X update from the club. For now, Bayern march on, but Muller’s European swan song will linger in fans’ memories.
