The former Ajax and Everton defender brings a blend of elite-level playing experience and a varied coaching background to north London as Spurs continue to shape their new technical set-up.
Heitinga retired from professional football in 2016 and has since built a reputation as a developing coach across several high-profile roles. He managed Ajax on two occasions, first serving as interim manager in 2023 before returning to the position on a permanent basis in May 2025.
However, his second spell in charge proved short-lived, with Ajax dismissing him in November 2025 after just five months. During that period, the Amsterdam club struggled for consistency, enduring disappointing runs in domestic competitions as well as in European fixtures.
Despite that setback, Heitinga has continued to be highly regarded within coaching circles. Alongside his work at Ajax, he has held assistant coaching roles at both Liverpool and West Ham United.
Most notably, he was part of Liverpool’s coaching staff during the previous season, working under head coach Arne Slot as the club secured the Premier League title.
“John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch,” Frank said.
“He had an impressive playing career across Europe — including five years in the Premier League — and with the Dutch national team.
“As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward.”
