Burnley’s return to the EPL under Scott Parker has seen them suffer three defeats in their opening four fixtures despite producing competitive performances.
Parker’s side began the campaign by pushing Tottenham close on the opening day, showing early signs that they could compete at the top level. A hard-fought win over Sunderland followed, offering hope of momentum.
However, subsequent matches have highlighted both the team’s promise and the unforgiving nature of life in the Premier League.
Two weeks ago at Old Trafford, Burnley’s resilience was undone by a late spot-kick converted by Bruno Fernandes. Then, on Sunday, they experienced a painful repeat.
Against Liverpool, Burnley delivered arguably their most complete display of the season, earning praise for their organisation and energy.
Their efforts looked set to secure a point until stoppage time, when Mohamed Salah stepped up to convert the decisive penalty and condemn the Clarets to another narrow defeat.
“It is harsh, but that’s this league,” said Parker.
“Listen, you can lose football games in this league. Certainly with the team we are, sometimes you can lose football matches.
“But you want to see improvement, you want to see us be competitive and I see every bit of that today [against Liverpool on Sunday] and I’ve seen every bit of that over the last couple of performances.
“We’ve gone to Old Trafford away, in the dying minutes, conceded a penalty, Liverpool today…but yes, we’re competitive and that pleases me.”
