Ruben Amorim has warned that Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo “has to improve” in key areas and must be handled carefully as he returns from injury.
The 19-year-old, who starred at Euro 2024 and scored in last season’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City, has struggled with form and fitness this term, but his manager sees immense potential.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Lyon tonight, Amorim said, “When I see Kobbie, I see a lot of talent. But there are things he has to improve, his pace in the game and his work in the build-up. Near the box, he’s got real quality, and that’s why he’s shone in that role in Europe.
“But he’s not a complete player yet, he’s 19. If I said he was the finished article, I wouldn’t be helping him.”
Mainoo, sidelined for two months with injury and yet to pen a new deal amid reported interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid, needs careful handling according to his manager. “We have to be careful with Kobbie,” Amorim added.
“He’s been out for a while, so we’re managing his fitness. We’re thrilled with him, but we can’t rush him back.”
Amorim also turned his attention to Joshua Zirkzee, the Dutch striker who has shown signs of life after a slow start at Old Trafford. “He’s improving in every area,” Amorim said.
“He’s not your classic No. 9, but he needs to be more selfish. He’s getting sharper, working harder, defending better, and linking play well.
Against Arsenal, he led the line brilliantly, and in games like Sociedad, he dropped into a No. 10 role. He’s on the right track.”
United’s recent solidity, conceding just four goals in their last six outings, has sparked hope among fans, but Amorim insists it’s a collective effort, not just down to the backline. “The team are more united now,” he explained. “You can see the difference from earlier in the season. Players like Alejandro Garnacho are tracking back better, while Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro have brought stability.
“Up top, Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee are pressing, defending, and cutting off passing lanes. It’s a team thing, not just the defenders.”
In a fresh update from X, Amorim doubled down on his cautious approach with Mainoo, posting after training on April 9: “Kobbie’s talent is clear, but we won’t risk him. He’s too important for United’s future.”
With the Red Devils pushing for consistency in Europe and at home, Amorim’s blend of youth and pragmatism could be the key to unlocking their season.
