Rodrygo has apologised to Real Madrid supporters after his late red card capped a difficult Wednesday night for the Spanish giants in a 4-2 defeat to Benfica.
Real Madrid ended the Champions League league-phase clash with just nine players after two dismissals in stoppage time. Raul Asencio was sent off in the 92nd minute for a second yellow card, before Rodrygo was shown a straight red moments later for dissent following protests over time-wasting.
The result left Real Madrid outside the top eight of the league-phase standings, meaning they faced the prospect of a Champions League play-off place for the second season running.
Rodrygo later addressed the incident in a message to fans, accepting responsibility for his actions. “I let myself get carried away in the moment while complaining about the time-wasting,” the Brazilian forward said. “It’s not my way of doing things. I understand the consequences and I apologise to the fans, the club, my teammates and the coach.
“We will stay united and keep fighting for this badge and for this Champions League.”
The red card marked a rare lapse in discipline for Rodrygo, who had not previously been sent off in a match for Real Madrid. Despite the setback, his standing within the squad remained strong.
In recent weeks, Rodrygo had been one of Real Madrid’s most consistent attacking performers, contributing with goals, assists and high-energy displays from the front line. He was still expected to play an important role as the club looked to respond quickly, both domestically and in Europe.
