The 54-year-old manager, who has enjoyed a glittering spell at City, insists his drive is deeply personal.

This past season saw City claim only the Community Shield, while they finished third in the Premier League – an outcome Guardiola nonetheless described as “an achievement” given the challenges his side faced.

Their Champions League campaign also brought moments of uncertainty, though they ultimately progressed from the group stage.

“It’s to prove myself that I can do it; I don’t want to have those feelings that last season left,” he said.

“Because when we win, the wine tastes better afterwards, you sleep better. I don’t know a manager who loses games and sleeps like a baby. It doesn’t happen. You’ve got to worry. That’s part of our life.”

Despite the dip by their high standards, Guardiola’s record at the Etihad remains formidable. Since arriving in 2016, he has led the club to six Premier League titles – including an unprecedented run of four in a row – along with six domestic cups.

The crowning glory came in 2023 when City lifted the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.

Now, the focus shifts to the Club World Cup, with City set to begin their campaign in less than two weeks.

The tournament offers a chance for silverware and a fresh start, as Guardiola looks to spark a resurgence.
