Pep Guardiola has claimed that the ball used in the FA Cup is “not right” after Manchester City struggled to convert chances during their 3-1 win over Plymouth.
Despite registering 29 shots against the Championship side, City required two set-piece goals from teenager Nico O’Reilly to come from behind after being 1-0 down. Kevin De Bruyne sealed the win with a close-range finish in stoppage time. Out of the 29 shots, only nine were on target, while 10 were blocked and another 10 went wide.
“It’s difficult to control (the ball),” Guardiola explained. “For many years, players and managers have spoken about this. When you lose, it may seem like complaining, but the ball is not right. This has happened many times in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. I understand it’s a business and agreements are made, but just look at how many shots went over the post. Check out other games.”
An FA spokesperson responded to the ball-related criticism, stating: “Mitre’s Ultimax Pro ball – used in the Emirates FA Cup and all other FA competitions – has undergone FIFA testing. All professional footballs must meet FIFA Quality Pro accreditation, and this ball meets all testing standards.”
“Together with Mitre, we acknowledge that preferences may vary, but we’re confident in the ball’s performance. With over 350 goals scored in the knockout stages so far, it adds an exciting element to a highly competitive tournament.”
Mikel Arteta also voiced concerns about the ball used in the Carabao Cup after Arsenal’s 2-0 home loss to Newcastle.
Despite taking 23 shots in their semifinal first leg at the Emirates in January, only three were on target. The Arsenal manager commented, “The ball flies a lot.”
The Carabao Cup uses a ball manufactured by Puma, while the FA Cup ball is made by Mitre. The Premier League ball is made by Nike, and the Champions League ball is produced by Adidas.
“I’ve said this for many years,” Guardiola remarked. “There are things beyond our control, and I’ve shared my opinion. The Champions League ball is exceptional, the Premier League ball is exceptional, but this one isn’t.”
